farm/fence ?

Only reason i can think of is if you are mowing the feild for hay. Fortunatly my grandfather took care of most of the big rocks in our feilds quite a few years before i was born.

sometimes i see plastic bottles on top i think thats to keep the rain from running down the top of the post and rotting .. maybe the rocks helps do the same thing

Keeps the bird poop off the top of the posts. Poop is acidic, and makes the posts rot out faster, from the top down.

Well, it sounded good....

Many things used for the same thing, but it's all about keeping the water from soaking in the end. Rocks warm up, and keep heat from the sun longer than most things found in the field, there for they tend to have a drying effect to wick moister out.

I mark deer crossings and where i go in and out of a field hunting with cheerwine bottles. usually what i have in the floorboard.
