Fastest car for $5k??

I love the old Datsun 510's and AE86 RWD Toyota Corrola's. They weigh about as much as a common tin cracker box and with any decent modern v6 drivetrain you have yourself a quick car. On top of that they look cool as hell.

This one has a Nissan Pathfinder V6 in it making a little over 200hp but the little car only weights a touch over 1700lbs if a remember correctly.

My heep is for sale, but you wont touch it for $5K! I know if you look hard enough these turbo buicks can be found cheap. With little mods these things can still compete with a lot of todays HP.

Gotta love Forced Induction! Dad's got a blown motor in his too!

Anyone intrested in the GN, let me know. I've got tuition to pay for!

RWD Toyota Corrola's.
guy in durham has one with a wankel turbo motor putting out some pretty respectable times. i think he's been playing with his turbo 2nd gen camaro mostly lately though, that's all i've seen him running at 'nam.

Mid 60's VW bug. Pick one up for a hundred bucks and put the other 4900 into the motor. Ive seen guys in super low budget bugs run low tens all day long. Bigger jugs, chevy pistons, four barrel carb, cheap turbo kit and a hundred shot of NOS can make those little suckers FLY!! As for handling, Id make mine a baja car and kick ass on the street and on the back dirt roads.

There was mention in the initial of something that you'd actually 'want to drive and be semi reliable'. Does that imply daily driveable? With that being the case, most of the V-8 Z's and fox bodys would lose lots of points.

I had a mostly stock 5.0 mustang and wet weather handling was so sketchy it drove me to buy another vehicle to drive on rainy days after less than 10 years of ownership...
I shudder the thought of driving one putting 300+ hp to the ground...

Just food for thought...

IF streetability is a factor, i'd say the turbo 4 bangers and wankels are at the top of my list.

A GN would be sweet...but where are you finding them for under 5k? People seem to be pretty proud of them when it comes time to sell.

the 510 is a powerhouse waiting to be unleashed. Another popular swap is a SR20DET. Those turbo 4cyl wth an intercooler and ECU can be had for $1000-1500. Drop one of those ina 510 and you got a really light really fast car.

I have an ae86 (rwd rolla) that is very fun to drive. It is just under 2100 lb, put down 121 whp, has sticky tires and 4.77 gearing. It handles very nicely but does not move like my 64' Beetle. The beetle has a 2275cc motor w/ 48mm webers and Berg 5 spd trans. Although I went a little overboard with the bug, It at first became very fast for a little bit of money and there are tons of options out there for them.
