LOL, Upnover's thread got me thinking.

This spring i joined a 5k training program. It lasted for about 3 months, and i was running 3 miles a day in no time. I slimmed down a bit, but never lost more than 8-10lbs.

After the program i quit running. just couldnt find the motivation, lol and my weight still fluctuates plus or minus 10lbs.

i know...3 months wasnt really long enough to see alot of gains...

anyone else having trouble beating laziness?

^^^I believe you and I started a work out routine at about the same time...I lasted about as long. I ended up losing 15 lbs...and haven't done much physical activity since July...luckily, I've maintained weight though.

Get a good cross country mtn bike and hit the road youlll be surprised the weight you drop from riding and builds ya arms in process!!! or excercise bike works too!!!

swimming, swimming and more swimming. Less abusive on joints and similar results to running as far as weight loss goes. It's more shoulder intensive than leg intensive, but the torso muscles get a better workout

The problem w/ most excercise regimens like this is is... it takes time! It takes time to run 3 miles, go swimming, bike to work etc.
I'd love to start doing something like this but between 9.5 hr work days + commute + time w/ family (most important!), helping w/ 2 young kids + hobby time, it's hard to figure out when to squeeze it in!

About 4 months ago, we gave up sugared drinks and just made it a point to eat healthier, that alone I lost 10 lbs.

I was also getting a little round, and started riding my mountain bike pretty heavily back in May. Lost a hair over 20lbs in 3 months, and have kept it off since then. I live about 5 minutes from the Whitewater center in charlotte, and they have 13 miles of fast, strenuous trails, so that helps alot too. I was riding 3-4 times a week when I was losing the weight, now its more like 1-3 times a week.

I did a lot of running in HS and have generally hated it ever since. I can chase a soccer ball/football/frisbee all day long, but I can't run for the sake of running. I actually tried it last week for the heck of it, made it a half a mile, and decided to go for a bike ride in the morning instead.

To brag a little, when I first started riding the trails at the Whitewater center regularly, it took just under 2 hours to make a full 13 mile lap. Now I do it in 1hr10min and I've added an optional 1/2 mile of trail. Its really awesome when you're the one passing people instead of the one being passed.

Before Memorial Day of this year I NEVER worked out, didn't play sports in high school at all either. I had steadily been gaining weight though and at 26 I decided it was time to loose it. I started at 266 and I am currently at 229, I gave up Mtn. Dew, no crap snacks, watched my portions and joined Planet Fitness. I've been doing alot of running on days I am not at the gym, my goal is work out 6 days a week. Ive found the hardest part about distance running is the mental wall I have to break down everytime I hit the trail. I'm able to run the 6.89 mile lap around Salem Lake in 1hr 6 min. I got a wild hair and actually signed up for the North Carolina Marathon in November, my goal is to simply finish it.

Absolutely awesome!

In my jr high and high school days I was a runner. Ran track for a couple of years then weight lifting class we had to test on the mile run. Each semester we had to cut our time to improve our grade. My final test time was 4:35min mile. Back then it wasn't so hard. Had friends/ classmates to push me.

Fast forward 25 yrs I've tried many times to get back into running. Joined planet fitness a few months ago and bound and determined to get to the point were it becomes routine. I'm down to a 15min mile now

Started off at 240. Stuck at 225 now.

I was running only 2 miles a day 5 days a week & swimming when i could. I dropped 35lbs in 6 months with no diet changes. I pinched a nerve in my hip about a year ago & they can't fix it but I only gained 5lbs back. Different people are different. I miss running & hiking myself.

I've been running for about 6 years now. Started back when I was a sophmore in college. My starting weight was 310-315 and now I'm around 195 with a 32" waist. Yes it was hard and slow but I stayed with it, stuck it out, never gave up. Now look where I'm at, 195 lbs, 32" waist.

Everybody says hey running is the best. Next guys says now biking is the best. Third guy says something different. Well here is the truth. It's different for different people. Running works for me but in the last six years, I've added or taken away different things. I'll ride a bicycle every so often just to change it up. I tried lifting weights but that only added weight. It was muscle not fat but still it didn't work for me. Currently I'm looking at martial arts classes. still gotta find one that fits my schedule.

The common thing for people that have lost a LOT of weight is, don't give up. Stay with it a little bit longer. Try running for 3 months, then do a bicycle for 3 months, then swimming for 3 months. CHange it up so you won't get bored but most important, don't give up. Look at me, it took me 6 years to get here but I did it.

i am a former power lifter, so i already dont drink sodas (did you know they are an acquired taste) and not really into junk food and candy.

The diet part of the equation is already there.

You really need to decide what you want to do...

1. put on muscle and get big
2. cardio/endurance overall fitness

It's all but impossible for a "normal" person to have both..

Swimming is nice and you can get a good work out from it. I use pretty much purely for breathing.

Running is good but will kill your joints especially if you're a larger person.. Also like some said it can get boreing.. Running on the road sucks! Trail running on Mtb. single track is fun.

Biking is a nice mix.. easy on your joints and if you get into Mtn. Biking it's pretty stinking fun. Plus we are blessed with tons and tons of awesome trails within an hour of us. (N. Wilkesboro, Greensboro, Lake Norman, Hobby, Tanglewood, etc.

I'd say running is the cheapest with only buying some shorts and trail shoes ($150)... Swimming you need to join the YMCA for around where we are... And good luck getting lanes. I have to go early AM to get a lane... (Membership @ $34/month).. Biking can get expensive... but starting out $500 would get you a good entry level bike, helmet, gloves, etc....

If you want to take the boring or monotony out of excercise... start competing..

FYI, Planet Fitness has some 10 dollar down, 10 dollar a month deal going on right now, saw it on TV

As for me, I rely on the extraordinary ability to eat whatever I want, drink as much as I want, and never gain weight. In 5 years, I will revisit this thread and be upset that I lost that ability and now weigh a lot.

I fight laziness every morning, but my SSgt finds ways to motivate me lol
I hate runnning, and dont really care to much for the other crap we do for PT. We do something different everyday and with everything in the Corps its competative. I think thats the key, changing things up so you dont burn out and making it a game.

I was that way all the way thru HS and 8yrs after. I weighed in at a hefty 170lbs all those years. Wore size 32 waist. Next thing I knew I was 280 and getting ready to move up to size 40. Now I have to work hard to stay at 225 and size 36
