Not a single vote for Autozone, LOL!

I just watched a video on youtube about Autozone and how their stock is on the rise.....the general theme of the video seems to boil down to their market share of the "DIFM" market (Do It For Me, i.e. service shops) is so low that they have no where to go but up.....and that they stock their shops with highly trained, knowledgeable staff.....

The CEO talks about how they can install your wipers or battery for you, on the spot! One time.....ONE TIME I tried to get them to install a battery for me (no tools, middle of winter, didn't think I could make it home)...."sorry sir, that is listed as a difficult instillation, we cannot perform that installation" It was a Saturn, I bought an adjustable wrench with the battery and did it myself in the parking lot.

Autozone has become the Walmart of autoparts stores, except the prices still suck!

I see O'riellys and Advance are neck and neck....I will have to try the new one that opened around the corner, the last O'riellys I was in, the kid behind the counter wouldn't stop arguing with me about how the Chevy Cop cars came with the "New V10 LS motors"

I pretty much decided it wasn't safe to trust someone that stupid to grab the right box on the shelf.

Back from the dead!

Placed my first online order through Advance Auto last week because they had a 20% off online only coupon. Once I applied the coupon it took free shipping away which made the order total higher than it was without the coupon. Stupid.

I will probably continue using their online service though since I can return parts to their local store, which is close enough to walk to if need be.

Really depends where you are and mostly with who you're dealing with.

I generally find that O-Reillys is sligthly better when I'm traveling, but last time I broke down, I ended up in an Autozone parking lot and the people there were super helpful.

Advance if its a price hunt (fuel/oil/air filters and misc BS) because eof the online coupons.

Napa if I actually need help or need to fit an oddball part or match a belt of find that "custom" radiator hose for a TJ with a Novak v8 radiator, or get anything for the tractors, etc. They also make hydraulic hoses, and its 3 women behind the counter in Stanley and they know their stuff. Plus they will usually run it on some big discount commercial account if i wink at em just right.
Old as shit thread but Matt is right. The ladies behind the counter at NAPA know more about cars, trucks and tractors than 95% of the mouse clickers at any other parts store. I never worry about talking over their heads.

That new guy at NAPA in Stanley is an asshat. Complains about everything, cusses too much, and just generally has a bad attitude and yet is cocky about it. Also gave me the wrong width v-belt the first time I dealt with him, even though it was printed right on the belt. I didn't notice until I got home of course.

Haven't dealt with him yet. Is this the guy that drives the Audi or whatever? He followed me out one day and was trying to talk to me. Sounded too much like a yankee so I wasn't listening.

Now That’s doing something for someone on here to be criticizing his cursing.....

I usually shop Autozone, always close by where ever I live . I actually used to love Pepboys as their big stores were always stocked with goodies but anymore they have shrunk. I know some people swear by Napa but I've had nothing but bad luck with their parts or tools Ive bought . granted maybe 3 times I bought their the tool/ parts either went bad or the quality flat out sucked.

F bombs and such in front of customers you don't know just seems completely unprofessional.

Oriellys on Garners Ferry rd columbia sc. I've got 5 friends that work there. Bert (Michigan native. Loves to bullshit and if I'm in the store for less than 1/2 an hour, he gets butthurt) , Jamie (currently restoring a 66 Galaxie) , Stephen (6'6 bearded fellow that does Hemi swaps) Jimbo (builds SBC/BBC race trucks) and Q (building a v10 swapped Dodge Dakota). Been a regular customer for 12 years.

There is a really really really good looking guy that works at the advance auto on S. Tryon near Carowinds Blvd. Word is he’s been around the block a few times, and is really good at destroying Toyota’s..

What hours does he typically work? I've been going to all the Ft Mill stores since they opened 10-15yrs now. That Advanced used used to be the closest one other than Napa on S Tryon.

I am a manager at the S. Tryon store.
I usually work daytime hours, but I have been training 2 new closers so I’ve been working the late shift. 12-9pm a lot.

My favorite is whichever one pays attention to the customer that is in the store and does not make a line of people trying to checkout wait for them to chat with someone on the phone about there 1991 ford escort and if it needs a water pump or not. But seems they all take the phone calls over in store customer. I suppose they figure they already have the suckers in the store so why not answer the phone too...

Recently been digging the pep-boys in Raleigh.....prices are competitive, and the guy behind the counter is able to look up part numbers without asking me what engine my truck has.

I think what bothers me than no CQ around anymore, is the LOOP RD AUTO PARTS is gone. Those guys were awesome. Pretty well stocked, especially foreign make car parts. And usually had the tool or tap to get you out of a jam. And they were gear heads on the counter that knew and understood why you’d have corvettejeepmustangdoge parts on that same vehicle.
Just reading this old thread, but WHAT?!?!? Loop Rd kicked ass. When I lived on that side of town that was the place to go. They had an in-house machine shop as well. I had no idea they were gone although I was worried when that NAPA opened right in front of them forever ago. I saw someone else mentioned Western Auto; I think my first trips/purchases for auto parts were at the one that used to be in Raleigh off Tryon Rd. Good times.

I still prefer the old Car Quest stores and will go to a NAPA if I see one. At least the people behind the counter usually know something about automobiles. The quality of service at whatever place you go starts with the person at the counter. Nowadays it is mostly just a "look up the part in the computer" kind of thing but for those of us that do not have "standard" needs the Autozones of the world will always get passed by.
