With the new place WILL come a garden... doing some preemptive planning on the varieties for the usual home garden.

What are your favorite HEIRLOOM varieties for :
  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Squash (yellow & Zucchini)
  • Sweet peppers
  • Okra
  • Green Beans
CliffNotes for Dummies: Heirloom plant species are vegetables, flowers, and fruits grown from seeds that are passed down from generation to generation. Heirloom seeds are open-pollinated, meaning they rely on natural pollination from insects or the wind.

Going to go on a bender with the Seed Savers catalog?

I actually really like some of the heirloom melon varieties. I can't remember which ones, it's been a while since we grew any. Someone bought the property behind us where our garden was, so we had to... umm... dismantle it.

I am from Haywood county that is considered as producing the best maters around and these have always been my favorite since I was a kid. The taste, texture, and size is better than any other I’ve found. I should be able to find you some seed if you want to try growing starters.

This is what the wifey says:

  • Tomatoes------- Amish Paste and Cherokee Purple and Speckled Roman
  • Cucumbers------ Marketmore and Russian pickling
  • Squash (yellow & Zucchini)----- Crooked Neck and Pattypan (yellow) and Black Beauty (zucchini)
  • Sweet peppers------- California Wonder
  • Okra------- Clemson Spineless
  • Green Bean-------- Contender

Baker Creek (rareseeds.com) is another source like Seed Savers. If you're on the book of faces there is a group called the "great seed vault" that would be of interest to you.
