I just got a used 4wd hardware fiberglass tub for my CJ-6. It does not have any major damage and I paid next to nothing for it. It has a couple of chips and some scratches but is in good shape. I know nothing about fiberglass repair or finishing. I don't have painting equipment, experience, a garage to do it in, or money to pay someone else to do it. I am going to do this in my backyard. The tub is setting on a table 3' off the ground so it is easy to work on. It has been stripped of everything that was in it.
What is the best way to repair a small (3/8") chip out of a corner or edge?
I hauled it home on a trailer with the bottom of one side setting on the side rail of the trailer and the passenger side edge sitting on the wood deck of the trailer. The ride home made the outer fiberglass portion separate from the inner support panel. Nothing is cracked or broken and it would seem that I could shoot some epoxy in there to bond them back together. Is there a certain kind of epoxy I would need for this?
The tub currently is mostly the factory white (gel coat?) with some words spray painted on it. I was told to wet sand the tub with 400-500 grit wet/dry sandpaper to get it ready to prime. Does this sound right?
I want to get the tub in primer as soon as I can. I don't have access to painting equipment so I have to do it from rattle cans. I know it won't be a perfect paint job and thats not what I am after. I just don't want runs or for the paint to fall off. Can someone recommend a spray can primer that works properly on fiberglass?
What rattle can paint works good on fiberglass? I would guess it would need something with some elasticity as the tub is very flexible.
Thanks
Bob
