Ficht outboard motors worth the risk?

Figured id ask here to since alot of people on here have boats and fish.

Been on and off looking for a larger v-hull and seem to have found a boat that could fit the bill.(boat is priced almost good enough i would consider repowering without even trying to get this motor right, but im cheap and like getting deals.) it has a 1999 evinrude 150 ficht motor. The guy said it had started spitting and sputtering last time he used and he hasnt used it since due to an injury roughly a year ago. so if it has good compression im thinking it is probably something simple. but ive been reading on the ficht motors and everyone seems to have third hand horror stories, but alot of people that had the motor seemed to like them.

Anyone had one or would take a risk with getting a boat with one on it?

I traded my pre-ficht fast strike for a new and improved ficht 150. Never ever ever ever ever ever...ever ever ever again.

Now if the deal is there...there is a market for that motor for parts and then you could re-power.

Imagine if Hugo tried to reproduce the Ford 6.0 on a dodge transmission assembly line....that would be more reliable than a ficht motor.

I’ve already got a buddy with a 06 mercury 150 sitting on a stand but it wouldn’t be as good a deal then, and take some serious thinking.

I’d still be ahead on it but just a little bit vs getting one ready to go

Just not worth it IMO. A guy I work with in FL had one because his older Mako came with it and he bought it to restore anyway. Well a repower was further down his list until about 2 months after buying the boat and he was becoming good friends with SeaTow or the parts house near him. It quickly got a new Suzuki and the list got shifted around a bit.

Like what @Ron said. If the deal is there, it may not be bad for parts since there are some folks that are just a glutton for punishment and keep reviving FICHT engines.

well that boat fell through. im checking out a princecraft tomorrow morning, but it may be a little shorter than what im wanting, but priced really well. There is an Alumacraft boat im also interested in but its on the other side of the state, it hasn't been ran in around 10 years but has been in storage, it is the length im looking for and has good reviews. im assuming the boat would need new fuel lines and batteries and carbs rebuilt? anyone familiar with 99 suzuki outboards?
