My backyard is one continuous, variable slope. I'd like to terrace it to have some more level areas. Would it be unwise or how deep could I go w the fill ? It would be pie shaped in cross section, deeper at the bottom/edge of the field and tie into existing grade at the top? Would I need to use a certain type of fill if the leach field ever needed to be replaced above the old one? Rumors say our neighborhood will have sewer service in a few years and the line will definitely cross my backyard if that happens. Septic is circa 1984 w no problems so far.

Septic systems are kinda one of those things you don't mess with. Although your permit should cover another field if your's ever failed, a soil scientist would deny you another field if the ground is disturbed. A septic field installer would deny you one as well.

Your gamble on sewer.
