I finally finished painting my truck after 2 months of prep. 1 problem though, forgot to wetsand after the 3rd coat of base. put 4 coats of clear on, and 2 days later, entire truck orange peel. I have 2 options, wetsand it down to second coat and respray, or leave it like it is. It really doesnt look bad, it has a kinda hammered look to it, because its the entire truck. what do you guys think?

how soon after you finished spraying the base did you hit it with the clear?

you have 4 coats of clear on it, you should be able to sand down the orange peel with 1500 or 1800 grit and then buff it out with 3m rubbing compound. The shop I worked at years ago would sand and buff out every paint job, our painters sucked. They always had some orange peel but one guy would run almost every paint job, we called him marathon man, he didnt last a month :shaking:

will post a pic when camera starts working.. i was going to buff it, but im not exactly how it works with orange peel. If the orange peel is in the basecoat, then i would have to sand/buff away clearcoat and then respray clear? if someone could enlighten me that would be great

the orange peel is in the clear coat, sand it down till it is a uniform white color and smooth, the orange peel is gone then and you can then buff it. Wet sand one way back and forth, no circles or criss crossing, basically straight lines but stay off and a 1/8th of inch or so from the edges or you will burn through then when buffing. Use a rubber squeegee to dry off the panel you are sanding to see if it is down to being smooth finish. Look at the 2nd picture on this page, that is how it should look when the orange peel is gone, you can see near the edges the blue paint in pits, that isnt totally smooth but thats ok at the edges.

yea, i got wet sanding down, just at what point to stop, and then buff. if anybody is interested, i got like 250 bucks for someone to come help/teach me wetsanding clear and then buffing. 250$$$

buffing

If you used cheap clear the buffing will somtimes have cloudy areas. If you used good clear you should be able to make it look like glass. Good luck.

if you are willing to pay that much you should stop at a local body shop and ask them about it

yeah I forgot to put that in there, its funny though how many "professional" autobody guys sand with their fingers :shaking:
