whats going on guys. Im pretty new here not new to working on trucks just new to the 4x4 world. I have a tundra on air suspension and a s-10 bagged and bodied. im not affraid to turn wrenches just dont know alot about jeeps yet.

heres what I got
88 yj chassis 2-3" lift shackles 35x 12.50's on 15 x 10 (or possibly 12") wheels so they dont really look as tall as they should.
mid to late 70's cj 7 body with a 3" body lift
it has a 304 with a turbo 400 (just guessing on the tranny from a quick look) np231 tranfercase.
right now im preety sure it has stock 35 and 30 front and rear.

Im wanting to do a SOA lift and shackle reversal im not afraid of doing some welding so I figured since everywhere i have read all I see is to ditch the 35 and 30 if you want to run bigger than 33's I would like to step up to 37's and with the 304 which is full of tourqe Im gonna need to upgrade the front and rear.

I doubt i will be doing alot of playing in the rocks mosty just mudd and woods.

I need some help on what would be the simplest front and rear swap i know im gonna have to cut all the perches and all off im just wanting to avoid narrowing and haveing to change alot of other parts besides the front and rear. I have read alot of positive about the ford 8.8 and dana 44 I just cant seam to find anywhere that has what vehicals i can find these in. there are several junkyards local i could go lookaround at and maybe get lucky I just dont know what to look for. any help would be great also please through in your 2 cents I am new to jeeps and trying to learn but there arnt many jeep guru's around me that i know to go to for advise. I just wanna get this thing up and together the turn radius right now is horrible due to rubbing

you could possibly leave the d30 front (with chromos) and mate it to a 8.8 rear. that hp d30 is actually pretty stout once it has some solid shafts. the 8.8 comes in late 90s explorers

that may do fine.
in the mud with 37s it may be better to have some more beef.

full widths offer a lot more options:

d44 front /9" rear (F150s, F250s, broncos, etc)
d44 isn't *that* much stronger than a d30-- I opted to skip it and get a d60 front, but they are pricey.

d60/14bolt are what I decided to run with. And I'm not narrowing anything :)

everybody has different experiences with these types of things, lots of opinions.

Ok thanks on the 8.8 there is a yard up the road with a crapload of explorers. My fiancée used to have one so had to hunt don't a few parts. I'm going from memory on this isn't one axle shaft shorter than the other on explorers?

The d60 is out full sizes only correct? I don't want a crazy wide wheelbase plus don't want to go through the added expense of narrowing (my sonomas rear was narrowed 4" and the tundras rear was narrowed 5" niether was cheap).

d60s are full width, only about 8" wider than my stock d30 though.

yes 8.8 shafts are different lengths due to an offset pumpkin. also 8.8 lug pattern is 5 on 4.5, stock.

if you want to remain at a stock-ish width, a d44 front out of a bronco may be a good bet (avoid the ones with cast radius arm wedges!). I'm not 100% sure which years were the narrower ones though. I think they also had ford 9" rear, which would have the same bolt pattern (5 on 5).

here is my thread from a while back where I started asking similar type questions before I decided to go full width: http://www.nc4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95886

just found a place on my way to greenville tomorrow that had 8.8's out of explorers for like 150$ just a lil worried on the pinion offset on the drive shaft. will def be doing a cv and sye swap now probly upgrade to the 1330 ujoints at the same time

the pinion offset on the 8.8 is not an issue at all. especially if you are doing a SYE. here is a pic of my rear driveshaft with the 8.8 and SOA on saggy 2" springs:

another option is a set of 44's out of a grand wagoneer.....

Greenville NC or SC
I know a place with 8.8's for as little as $40.00...if you are strong enough

That would be greenville nc I know where washington is i have been there once before but i found out when i got to work tonight that i have to work sat sun and mon night i was going up to ecu for the football game but those plans are gone now. may have to look into the 40 axles im sure i can pick one up by my self was able to pick up and move around my rear end out of my tundra which is massive
