I am ready to lift my tj. So I have a couple of questions. First I plan on lifting it 3in's so what brand should I consider and stay away from. I plan on a suspension lift. This is not a daily driver just something I drive on the weekends etc.

I would like to do the lift with my 16yr son for the experience for both of us, but not sure we can take that on. I am mechanically inclined so not afraid of the work just don't know what I am doing.

Also, if I were to go the route of having a shop do it what/where are the best shops?

Thanks

Being that your TJ is a weekend cruiser, and you say you are mechanically inclined, if I was you I would definitly tackle this myself. Its not rocket science, and if you run into anything that stumps you, let it sit for a night, post up here on the internet for tips.
You should only need a good set of basic tools, perhaps have to add some larger metric stuff, and you can borrow a coil spring compressor from local parts store.
As far as what kit to get, first you should decide what size tires you want to run. Maybe instead of a full blown kit with replacement springs, you could get by with a 2" budget boost (poly spring spacers) and some quick disconnects.

My son and I put a 3.5" lift on his jeep as a high school project for him. Like he said before its not rocket science but just take your time and dont try to rush things. Its a good, easy project for yourself and him to begin with.

Take your time, do it yourself.
Use jack stands and wheel chocks. :D (Especially the wheel chocks. remember, e brake doesn't hold front wheels still. Not saying I've ever done something that stupid, but well, for a fat guy I'm REAL quick sometimes)
I'd swing by 4wp on Glenwood and talk to anyone but Greg. :D
Get your price list, and what you plan on getting, then go from there.
Whichever lift you get, I'd go ahead and make sure you get adjustable rear upper control arms for when you want to get a SYE.
When you're ready to do the work, it's easy enough just be patient and post on here if you have any questions.

Good luck.

I prefer a virtual lift to get the larger tires under it and still maintain good driving manners on and off road. That said I'm a fan of Rubicon Express and Clayton. Check with ECGS too for your lift, always good to shop around.
It's a straight forward job and all the info you could ever need is right here but should you need a hand just give a shout and I'm sure one of us would be glad to help you out.

I'm with RenegadeT, save some money and do the 2 in budget boost and a 1 in body lift it'll keep the cost down and will maintain the factory ride quality. Plus it's a lot simpler than trying to install a full 3 in lift in the driveway.

Guys thanks for the replies So if I do the 2in budget boost and 1in body will I need new shocks or anything else? Ideally I would like to change things out over time and not do all of this at one time since this is just a run around town jeep.

Hey guys I have a zj I'm planning on lifting 3.5 inches and I was wondering what the biggest size tire I could get would be...
