I've planned a family camping trip next week at Badin Lake and would like to take my daughter on some of the trails. Um looking for some advice as to which would be best for a beginner in a stock 06 rubicon. I've read enough to know "Daniel", and "Dickie Bell" can be challenging. I won't have a way to quickly re-inflate my tires if I drop ait pressure and I don't have quick disconnects for my away bar yet. So what I'm looking for is trails we could safely do without airing down or disconnecting.

Thanks.

Run Wolf Den, it's a good starter. I did it earlier this year in my 99 Montero on 31s, with a 13 foot kayak on top. Stock worn suspension and F/R sway bars, loaded with camping gear for 3. On the dry day, I never needed 4x4.

It's got a couple off camber downhill rocky turns, just enough to make passengers hold on tight. Nothing wild.

Disconnects are stupid.

There's air at the outpost. You're gonna want to drop tire pressure to 13ish, regardless.

It depends on the weather. Start with Wolf's den, falls dam, if it's not wet, consider Dutch John from the west end heading towards Rocky Mountain loop. If that all goes well, then Rocky Mountain loop counter clockwise. Then Rocky Mountain loop clockwise, then the west side of Daniel to the overlook and back, then Dickie Bell from the Rocky Mountain loop end, then Dickie from the falls dam end, then the front side of Daniel.

You can run every bit of that in a stock TJ, but it takes some driving. If you've never done any wheeling before, might stop on my list near Dutch John.

Disconnects provide a real lack of stability, lots of guys are running the Currie anti rock the happy place where stability and flex meet

Yep, air up at the Outpost just outside of Uwharrie on your way home. Doing the trails @ full PSI will be uncomfortable and a lot less traction.
Also, as a new guy, your best bet is to try and find a group to tag along with. It's not like you'll get lost or anything, but it's just a lot more fun w/ others and it's good to get some feedback on your technique as you go along.

We have two TJs that are set up very similarly. One has stock sway bars, the other has a Currie Antirock up front and a stock rear bar. Never once have we run an obstacle and said "oh yeah, that Jeep made it and this Jeep didn't because it has a different sway bar."

Where disconnects make a difference is with a stock TJ that has no lockers. As soon as the vehicle gets crossed up, it's stuck. Disconnect the front sway bar, and it has to get much more crossed up before the tires unweight. The downside is that the body tracks with the rear axle. This creates all sorts of weird behavior out at the margins, but even on flat trails, it's aggravating. The rear suspension basically stops articulating, and the body sways back and forth with the movement of the rear axle.

With two lockers, don't bother unhooking.

We're planning to be there next weekend if you want to tag along on some trails. We will also have air so you can air back up. We'll be at Hunt Camp, look for this piece of crap.

thinking of going next weekend myself...Discoing your front is no problem and I recommend doing it plus airing down. Go ahead and soak down the bolts on the axle with a penatrant so removal will be easier. I can show you what to do. This is what I drive:

follow my lead and things will be fine and you will have a good time.

oh...just saw you were going to be there tuesday thru thursday...leaves me out da loop. You won't have to worry about traffic that's fo sho.

I work weekends so tue-friday are my days off. Kinda nice I don't have to schedule days off and use my vacation time to get away for 4 days. Only crappy thing is the rest of the world does their adventures on the weekends.

You're on ALFD aren't you?

Yes. And it's Archer Lodge, not Archers.

We'll be there from Tues till Thurs

Well you ought to have the trails to yourself. I'd definitely stick to some easier stuff like Falls Dam and Wolf Den if you're wheeling alone. Less likely to have issues that would require help.

I go ride/camp at uwharrie about once a month during the week. Usually Tuesday through Thursday.
