I'm picking up a new combo and was thinking about a light/ultra light reel on a light weighted rod. I just wasn't sure if the reel was too small or not.

It would be this real:
BPS Pro Qualifier (PQ10)
  • Line Capacity:6/90
  • Ball Bearings:7+1
  • Max Drag:19.5 Lbs.
  • Recovery:31" Per Turn
  • Reel Weight (oz):7.5
On this rod:
BPS Johnny Morris Carbon
  • Light
  • 6'
  • Action:Fast
  • Line Weight:2-8 lbs.
  • Lure Weight:1/16 - 1/4 oz.

Or, would I be better off with a slightly bigger reel?
The BPS Pro Qualifier (PQ20)
  • Line Capacity:8/80
  • Ball Bearings:7+1
  • Max Drag:19.5 Lbs.
  • Recovery:33" Per Turn
  • Reel Weight (oz):10.4

I have a Medium setup and an Ultra Light setup right now, so I was thinking about picking up something in the middle.

Thoughts one way or the other?

What are you fishing for? That's going to determine a lot. Sounds like Trout from your location and combo choice.

As for the combo options above, either of those reels will be fine with that rod. Again, it goes back to what you're fishing for. you "accidentally" hook a bigger fish, and it'll burn the drag right out of a lightweight reel. With that in mind, I go a little bigger, but not too big to out weight my rod.

Most of the fish I catch are large bream, spotted bass, and large mouth. 1/2 pounders to 2lbs on average, I just thought a setup like this would make those fights more fun.

That'll be fine.

I have an ultra light 5' moderate action St Croix that's a 2-6 lb that I use for bream, crappie, small bass and trout. It has a Pflugger President reel on it I love.

I'd use it for the same thing your fishing for.

I've not fished w those short, wide spooled reels but caught lots of White Bass and Largemouths on 6 lb w open face reels; W a quality rod and line, a smooth drag, 3-5 lb. Bass are great fun to catch on light tackle and I can cast the same lures farther w 6 lb.
