I am in the middle of buying a 79 FJ40 chasis and cage.I have a 74 scout frame and axles along with a 258 6cyl. that is already installed in the scout.Everything on the scout frame looks fresh.New ball joints, bendix brakes, trw steering box...
Scout has steel floor mounted on frame with bushings and bolts.Seats and steering column are installed.Roll bar in the back.Keg fuel tank.
The FJ40 has tub, hood, grill and fenders + misc. stuff. Also has DOM cage.4-link rear with springs front and rear...

I was planning on taking the axles,wheels,motor...from the scout and using them on the FJ.
Now I'm wondering if I should tear the scout apart or not.The problem is that I will need to have perches for springs mounted on the scout axles along with the links. What would you guys do?What full width axles come with perches for springs? Can I just order universal perches?
Main prob.I don't know what I'm doing.Thanks,Daniel
some pics of both soon.

Upside is you have the scout stuff for free. Downside is none of it's drivetrain stuff is really desirable. Especially for a linked cruiser. Find a cheap old 4x4 f250 or f350 to tear apart.

Thanks for the info.I was gonna use the scout motor and trans because the FJ originally had a similar straight six.
What motor would you guys use?I believe he had a 4.3 in it.I'd like to make this vehicle legal with rear lights, windshield and whatever is needed.I just want it to be capable on and off road.

small blocks are an easy fit into a FJ, and are exactly what the doctor ordered.

You could run a cro-mo dust sprinkled FJ40/60 axle set in the front and a hybrid LC/mini truck rear and be good for 38's or so.. or a 44/60 combo would be good too and get you more width.

I bought the scout and it's in the yard. The FJ40 is being loaded on a trailer today and coming next Sat. from VA.Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the tips. What kind of motor/tranny should I be looking for if I want this vehicle to be steet legal and good off road?I'm not looking to make it a total climbing machine I just want it to be as good or better than a mild jeep.In other words I'd like to be able to drive HWY speeds 60-65MPH on way to play. Thanks again and please have patience.

sb chevy w/ a sm420 or sm465 IMO. My 2f w/ a sm420, stock tc and stock 40 axles w/ 37's will cruise at 55 all day long. Haven't had the balls to get on I-85 or 77 w/ it, but for driving to uwharrie and wheeling and then driving home... it does great.
