I came across a new yard today, back roads trips are fun, and in the very very back I see a project FJ40.

Full cab, some rust, seems pretty complete, all glass.

Worth making an offer...if so how much??
I don't know much about FJ40's so I knew people on here would know more than I.
Will soon be crushed I guess....

Passenger side framerail is usually in better shape(rust) than the driver side. The six is a very torky motor but doesn't like much over 55mph. Pre 1973 is a 3speed with drum brakes up front, 74 and up will have 4speed with disc up front. Toyota mini truck knuckles will switch out with no probs. The rear bumper(crossmember) is usually rusted pretty bad and is unavailable but you can install a new front bumper instead which is readily available and fairly easy. Chevy V8 conversions are very popular and a Saginaw steering setup is a must. Rear disc brake kits are bolton with chevy calipers and rotors. 1970 and down have thinner leaf springs with a extra one in each pack, these flex like rubber bands and ride better. Wheel base can easily be stretched 4 inches with no cost just labor. That's a quick overview.

Worst than I remebered but there....

If I really wanted a project, $500 would be top dollar...

Looks to be early 70's, probably a 1f, 3 on the tree, and drum brakes. I would keep looking, there are deals out there, but you have to stay away from sellers who think 40's are collector items...

It could be built, but would take a bit. 500 is pushing it at about max. Gonna be some rust issues.

Does it have a tailgate and a hatch, twin barn doors or two little swing doors and a hatch? The tailgate is VERY RARE.

Sort of a high dollar project. those were never cheap to find parts for, and routinely went south as I recall, but the Cheys conversion was popular as I recall (All from the 80's) I always liked the looks however, but I think as something to cherry out..... NO, as a beater 'Rat Rod' thing.... ok. Still I think you'll regret it quickly and want to off it. Plus the guy who has it probably thinks its 'Gold', they 'were' sought after some years back. Now, not so much...... I'd pass.... but it's really up to your skill levels. But I hate rust number 1....!

Yep, when it comes to body work or drivetrain work i will take drivetrain in a heartbeat.

To the OP, if you get it and find out you need parts for it give me a shout. Own a few of them along with a bunch of parts.

Guess I stand corrected.....lol.. Out in Cali, where I'm originally from, their expensive.. and few and far between...

I'd give $300 tops.

I'm estimating it's worth right at $350 in scrap metal not counting "time" (Which is a different rate for all of us) and gas. Last I remember scrap cars were going for $10/100 lbs. Very likely to be lower than that now. Got up to $12 last summer in RDU area.

I called today to setup a time tomorrow and he told me he had the title.

It is pretty close so I will not have much in picking it up. I think it could be a great project.
I have some drivetrain ideas and general resto plans.
