Flat bed to chasis mounting

Maybe I was not clear, judging by front porches comment. No body recommends welding or drilling the flanges. I refered to them as the flat areas. Sorry I wasn't specific as to the flat areas on the top and bottom. Didn't mean for anyone to confuse them with the vertical sides.

You are correct, modifying the top/bottom flanges in between the axles is a no-no. We did regularly extend frames and weld to the flanges, but it was always at the ends beyond the spring hangers. Sometimes you just need more frame to hang a couple thousand pounds of counterweight...haha

@Hurley , this better. Or is this an I-beam or an H-beam..............................

from the picture i'd say it's a wide-flange "W-beam". But, since you asked, one doesn't design for its use as an H shape because it's section modulus and moment of inertia are lower across that axis - some wide flange beams probably come close since their flanges are the same as their height (w6x15, w8x31, etc), but that's still not desired unless your design constraints won't allow the other orientation.

You lost me at modulus, I think I will just nose around the for sell and garage areas.

I know:) . I is not, are not, probably won't be engineer grade. Intense math or what ever they like to use woops this fellers arse. My degree other than welding and machining is the school of been down that road: fixed it, broke it, or it hasn't been back and must be working. I was good and started in pre engineering in Statics and all I wanted to do was build the stuff we were discussing in theory. I hate theory I can't put my hands on it.
