Can you flat tow a non titled vehicle (i.e. light buggy) to the parking lot at Uwharrie, stay on the trials and be flat towed back home? I know the minute you drive on any of the roads without a plate, they will write you a juicy ticket, but woud you be safe if you kept it on the trails?

I'm trying to determine if it's worth the hassle of having a light trail buggy that I'm planning to build titled and inspected to get a plate even though it will never be driven on the roads.

If the definite answer is no, are there any areas that you could do this? When I lived in Michigan, we used to bring our vehicles to The Badlands in Indiana where we paid (quite handsomely) to wheel on private property. THey didn't care if the vehicle was titled or registered, as long as you signed their waiver.

If I'm reading your question correctly...yes you can wheel the URE trails without a tag/plate (titled), but the minute you leave the double parking lot flat towing your junk home, its the same as cruising down I-85...wheels on the ground need to be tagged.

OK... that makes sense....

I have always wondered, however, about the legality (or lack thereof) seeing vehicles being flat towed with just the words "In Tow" scrawled across the back window or a sign. I seem to see them all the time on I-85 (funny you mentioned that). It would appear that they just bought a vehicle at auction and are pulling it home usually with a vehicle roughly the same size.

Would this apply also if it's on a tow dolly? Front wheels off the ground, rear on. I'm sure the tow dolly has to have a plate.

You can tow a non titled rig on a dolly (two tires on the ground) what is the diff in flat tow mode? Dosnt the front rig cover what is being towed?

I have no Idea...Never flat towed anything.

I had a friend of mine and he would go to auctions and flat tow cars back a lot, that was several years ago and all he had was a bill of sale. I'd check a little deeper before I gave up on this. We flat tow all the time, we have a 09 Saturn View set up with lights and tow it behind our coach. also a 89 4 runner that has been to Moab flat towed. But these were also tagged and insured.

Ask tknopp, he should know the answer to this question
