So I have a 1991 Wrangler with a flipped dana 300 and novak cable shifters. Since I've had the jeep I've never been able to put the front into high range, it will go into low range but the range of travel isn't as much as the rear stick and it will pop out every now and then. Even when rolling slowly the front won't engage high range. Additionally it recently started leaking and I was wondering how I check the fluid level on a flipped dana 300, I'd like to clean it up and give it a little more fluid to determine what is leaking.

Due to the shift rail design in a Dana 300, you cannot shift into front high range only.

Actually, you can if you remove the detent pills in both rails. BUT...then you can put the front in high and the rear in low. The next sound you hear is the transfer case exploding. Bad idea for sure!

It sounds like the OP has an issue with the shift cable adjustment. Disconnect the cables and attempt to manually shift the case into high. If it works then, it would seem likely that you need cable adjustment. If not, you should be able to tell if you have binding inside the case with a fork possibly.

I don't mean front high only, I mean it as I can't get the front into high at all. When I get the chance I'll try disconnecting the cable and seeing if it will shift into high. When I try it feels like it starts to engage but then just stops and the lever can't move any further.

Sounds like an adjustment issue. However, it is possible to modify the shift rails to allow front only low or hi, and still keep the pills in to prevent a low/hi situation. I've done it a couple times...
