really?

My understanding was all AMC V8s were balanced the same. And at least 1o the inline 6s was identical as well.

Think he is right

This is the same problem I had when I wanted to put a 727 behind a 304. No one could agree on which flexplate to use. Advance Auto even has 2 different flexplates for the same engine. I never installed the 304 because of this. I sold it and bought a 360! But I would say that a 360 flexplate would work on a 304. They are externally balanced.

Just a note the I6 will also bolt but it is definitely not balanced the same

I HAVE BEEN TOLD.
But have not tried.

That the older 252(?) I6 were balanced identical to the 304/360 but the 258 was totally different.

It does not seem intuitive that it would be correct, but I did check at a parts house (AAP/AZ I honestly cant remember which) and it was the same part#

All AMC/Jeep 258's are neutral balanced or internal balanced if you prefer the term. All AMC V8s are external balanced and each has a specific flywheel / flexplate and dampner for that pirticular engine size.

A 304 torqueflite flexplate will bolt to the back of any AMC V8 or 6 cyl made after 1972 but will only be balanced correctly for a 304, same for a 360 and 401.

balanced by th eFlywheel and Dampner.... then there's a good chance my 304 has been running un balanced for a few years now since I didn't pay attention to it's orientation when I removed it to be resurfaced.

would that hold true?

holes are indexed. It can only go on a certain way (as far as rotation goes). Bolt holes won't line up otherwise. And yes, flywheels and flex plates are engine specific for AMC V8s since they are externally balanced. Main difference b/w a 304 and 360/401 flywheel is that the 360/401 has a counterweight cast into the inside of the flywheel. With that said, all of the above have the same bolt pattern so you have to be careful to avoid some nasty vibes. I wouldn't think vibrations would be a big problem with a flexplate sinces its mass is negligable in comparison to the engines mass. Not the case with a flywheel.

Here is some more info for anyone else that may need it.
