My daughter has a 2000 focus, 4 cylinder, 4speed auto. It shifts fine when cold but wont shift out if 2nd when it gets warm, even tried manual shifting it.

She had it put on a diagnostic machine and was told all the sensors were working.

Would this be a clutch or converter issue? I thought about putting a quart of Lucas in it.

Any ideas?

repair

I do transmissions on these vehicles and what I have found is shift soleniod b to be defective when this happens although it does not flag it on a scan.

shift solenoid b is only on in manual low and 4th gear. if there is no 3rd, it is most likely a mechanical failure. third and reverse are the only 2 gears that all solenoids are turned off.
the first step in properly diagnosing the problem is putting a pressure gauge on it.

Thanks for the input.

If it is infact grooves in the high gear drum, will the lucas help out short term? She is planning on taking it to the local shop next week.
