For the builders here, and those fixing to build....

GCs watch YouTube videos every so often as well. :D
I was watching videos today about new retaining wall construction. [emoji23]
But I've talked with people that think what they see is the end of the conversation and that's the only way to do it.... Even if it won't meet code

I'm all for doing it yourself, but growing up in construction and working for a bigger gc now the internet has given people just enough information for them to think they know it all and then will try to tell licensed subs and contractors how to do their jobs.

Because.....there are too many subs out there (and GC's) that are nothing but laborers (if that), not craftsmen, and do shitty work. Some need to be told.

That's a two way street. In talking with contractors for our upcoming build, I have heard all too often "we do it this way, because that's the way we've always done it". It has surprised me the number of contractors that haven't even heard of some of the "new" methods that have been around a while. Do they never read a book, pick up a magazine, watch a youtube video, go to a trade show, etc??? I do.

(but then I do a lot of construction/carpentry projects thru church, friends, etc). Probably way more than the average DIY-er or Harry Homeowner.)

Your right, alot don't stay up on the latest and greatest more so if they are a small company and in a rural area. There are SO many different products in construction you could never work if you try to stay with the newest greatest product. I'm googling products that are spec'd in projects that I've never heard of.

New construction is for P*****s!
I still thinks it's cool to build from scratch, because the sky is the limit if my bank account doesn't crumble first.
Adding 21st century technology into 19th and 20th century homes is what I really love.
A few years ago did a ducted 3/1 MitsuE minisplit system in a circa 1910(ish) Columbia home. Worked great but the amount of cfms all three handlers pulled through one central return plenum caused a hellacious roar. I went through today and added an additional return to relieve some of it's draw.
Gotta love sheetrock on plaster.

Essential Craftsman channel on youtoobe is beginning a start-to-finish house build. Should be interesting and educational....

I've been watching that guy for a couple of weeks.

Me too but most of mine involve looking at different ways to tackle a project. Such as a shower floor pan, curb, etc. I know how I do it but it's sometimes good to get others' points of view on it. I'm surprised at how some people install a shower pan and even more surprised a lot of them think it's correct.
