hey yall, so i lost my transmission in my Expedition today, reverse went out and well don't have the money for new one or to pay someone to rebuild or much esle anything else for that matter. The only 1 option that I seem to be able to do is buy the rebuild kit and go at it myself, so just want a heads up on what to expect.
1. Is this a good, bad, descent or downright terrible transmission to learn on? lol
2. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, learn hand on anyways rather than books so is this doable for me? I know I'm slow to learn and not the "brightest bulb in the chandelier" but from some work and projects you guys have seen me do, could I have success at this.
3. 4R70W Transmission Complete Master Rebuild Kit (2004-2010) w/ Intermediate Piston
4. or this one 4R70W Super Master Transmission High Performance Rebuild Kit (2003-UP)
any and all help and advise is much appreciated.
(easy on the flaming right now, not in the greatest of moods)

Neither of those have a torque converter with them. You're going to want to replace it since it's full of whatever junk is floating around inside of a smoked transmission. If you don't, it'll just pump it right in to a freshly rebuilt transmission and probably make it live a short life.

I'd probably ask around and see what someone would charge to rebuild it if you pull it out and take it to them. A lot of the cost of a transmission rebuild is the labor from pulling it and installing it. You might be surprised at what someone would rebuild it for...you never know until you ask. If you were to try it yourself and it was FUBAR'd after you got it back in, then you'd be out more money and even madder about the whole situation. Not to mention, you usually get a warranty if someone else does it.

Also, the probably only made a few million vehicles with that same transmission in it, so the likelihood of finding a good, used one on Craigslist that functions just fine and for cheap is pretty high.

i've personally never had good luck with this...low mileage or higher mileage just not worked out the greatest no matter how cheap or expensive and when it goes a short while later, I'm the one that pays for it twice the labor and more in parts/new/rebuild so I stay away from used trans now.
I'm gonna call around too for prices on labor to rebuild but was kinda hoping to teach myself how to do it and see if I have it in me or not. Torque converter is def an automatic replacement!

Any overdrive trans--even more so the one in your dd/tow rig-- is going to be a shitty "learning experience" especially since you must literally "do it by the book".

That being said the first auto I ever rebuilt was a 47re in my old Cummins. That also being said I had to rebuild it three times and ended up with close to $8k in it.

You don't have the tools needed to rebuild all the internal components.
Get a used one from the junkyard or get someone else to rebuild it. Both would come with a warranty.

Buy a flush kit from auto store and keep the receipt to show you flushed the trans cooler and lines otherwise they won't honor the warranty. Same thing with replacing the torque converter.

Don't even waste your time big dawg. call the local trans shops and take it out yourself

Ask the trans shop first before taking the trans out because some wont warranty it if the customer does it. Because how will they know if the person actually filled the trans up with the correct fluid or the correct amount or whatever.

well this has been an interesting 2 days to say the least LOL. "when it rains, It POURS"
-Trans went out Thursday afternoon
-borrowed neighbors car to get to work on Friday
-Friday around 1pm water line busts in the basement floods the whole downstairs...I mean FLOODS. Poor wife and daughter spent 3 hours vacuuming up all the water until i got home around 4:30 and then some...5" of standing water in the whole downstairs room and garage. (good thing they are home)
-we get in the neighbors car to go to Lowes and get plumbing supplies...we pull in the driveway after done and his car is smoking and leaking radiator fluid everywhere....WTH (you gotta be kidding me) temp never rose but it bubbled over apparently.
-installed new plumbing and finally something went right. lol
finally drug the expo around the driveway with the winch and jeep and got it in the garage ready for teardown.

my neighbor knows the local trans shop really well and told me the guy will do full rebuild with TC and HD parts for towing, parts and labor and warranty for $800. So looks like I'm going that route I reckon.

he will as long as i bring it to him and he drives it first when done to check the fluid and install. i was weary of that also but got it covered.

Sorry for your rough week.
If you are renting you should have called the owner with the plumbing issue and had him fix. That's the kinda situation where trying to be a nice guy can hurt you down the road.

well i called his worker and he came over to go behind me and double check all my work and everything went well.

He should take off the cost and labor of the repair on your next month's rent since you went ahead and fixed it before it got worse.

He does he's good about that.
Well my dad just called out of the blue offering to pay for the transmission to be rebuilt a local shop can do it for 800 if I bring it to him with a warranty and all and even the heavy duty kit and such for Towing. Wow I'm speechless

Not if he's smart he wouldn't.

In my rentals if it's repaired before I'm contacted the tenant would be out...

Well we have this agreement worked out. I fix anything and everything I can and just bill him with receipts. He trusts me and likes that I maintain and keep up with his place. I fix his cars, work on his properties some so we're in understanding with each other.

Looks like trans shop will put in tow kit and Kevlar bands with something else he said for 1000 so should be a good DD and tow rig when done.

Awesone that you two have a deal that works out for you!

Why would that not be smart?
So if his guy inspects it and the repair is done correctly he shouldn't apply credit to the rent?
Oh but I guess it would be better to allow the house to flood while trying to get up with he landlord first for who knows how long.

Don't mean to De rail the thread but there are a ton of ways it can go wrong.
1) the landlord could say rent was never paid in full and start eviction. John couldnt prove he paid it in full. Assuming he signed a standard nc lta this is specifically covered.
2) landlord opens himself to un-inhabitable living condition claim
3) assuming John doesn't have a mechanical contractor license
4) what about future mold issues.
There are literally 100,000 what if scenarios and 99,999 are bad for one or both parties. A landlord tenant relationship is a busienss-client relationship nota friendship.

well sorry to barge in here but I have to COMPLETELY disagree with you here Ron. I've had the best relationships with Landlords by being/making friendships rather than just a 'business' mentality get your money and move on. The whole world operates on "all about the money" and screw the morals and friendships, sorry but it does and that sucks. Meeting Landlords that want more than just money is a blessing and half and I have the pleasure to say almost every one of my landlords have been this way except a few, and those few were as greedy and selfish and ugly as could be. To me it's like a boss: you have a greedy selfish bossy boss who doesn't care about his employees and just wants money and power tripping all the time, usually he's got a higher turn around of employees and nobody wants to work for him/her and usually those employees will not be that loyal to them since they are just treated like slaves and irreplaceable peons. You take a boss who cares about his people, treats them with respect and appreciation and shows and gives it to them according to their work and efforts and integrity THAT boss will almost always (for the most part) have very loyal employees, honest and hard working who will invest their time day after day to ensure the best performance for the company and product rather than show up just to do the bare minimum, collect a check and get the heck outta dodge.
I've been a manager of many jobs in my 20yrs of work force and I have experienced this in every single job of weather I was manager or working under them. So this applies to landlord/tenant relationships. Most landlords could care less when a tenant loses a job or car has a major issue that sets them back and they have to be late on rent or partial to take care of the hardship they are dealing with. Those landlords (have had a few) just say "pay or hit the highway" basically and bring out eviction and the law to make that person/family look like criminals for having to deal with unexpected hardships.
When I was a manager of 18 man cleaning crew at ASU for almost 2yrs, when the contract came up for renewal our company lost. My boss and even ASU staff almost assured me I would be able to move onto the new company since I ran the show for 2yrs and was good at it but NOPE, new company came in and would not allow it. They wanted "fresh" system and management and I would have to start out as "regular" guy (HUGE cut in pay, couldn't afford our place). So since I lost my job, that landlord didn't care at all and we left that same week knowing we couldn't afford that place anymore (out of respect for her) and well, she sued me for last 4 months of rent of the lease. This next part is AWESOME: went to court and the judge didn't award her the case. He respected that we left immediately knowing we couldn't afford it since I lost my job and didn't try and stay for "free" like a lot of people do taking advantage of the system and he even called her greedy right there in the courtroom in front of everyone. Don't know if that judge was a believer but sure had the righteous actions of one!

To me a good landlord is realistic and has a heart and compassion for people and understands these things and works with good tenants to the best of their abilities and these are usually men/women of God to be of such character as the world doesn't operate by God's standards and morals and love/compassion for others. My landlord in Boone for 4yrs we were awesome family friends!! They payed for my shop materials, payed for total remodel of inside of the trailer and he invested in the selling cars/jeeps I was doing and not cause he needed to make money but to give me a head start (he actually never accepted any of the profits).
My current landlord is similar, we have made great friends. We have hung out at work, at the house and help each other out as much as possible. As a matter of fact, through this transmission going out in our car he is giving me an 05 Ford Taurus to drive while fixing our car and will let me pay for it later, most likely working it off. This is what happens from having a friendship rather than just "pay and go" mentality. Well there's my 2cents about all this and this is just my experience and opinions. I'm sure most will probably disagree but it's how I view this topic.

All that can be solved with simple documents signed and copies of checks attached.

Every landlord has their own business model and can do it however they want.

For me, it’s a business and a means to feed my kids. I’m not in it to make friends or be someone’s friend. While I’m compassionate, I’m also professional and expect the same in return. I’m doing it to put food on the table and clothes for the kids. If a tenant can’t pay for whatever reason, it’s usually bye bye. It’s just business. Don’t fawk with my ability to make a living and we are all good.

What if your employer couldn’t pay you? What are you going to do? How are you going to pay rent and feed the kids?

When a tenant doesn’t pay for whatever reason, it’s the same. The landlord expects that $ to, you know, feed his family. How is that greedy?

Take your head out of the sand.

John of all the crap you have ever posted here, this is the most incoherent nonsense you've ever spewed.

I think you need to re read your Bible, specificaly to find the parts where it says its ok to lie and not honor your commitments.

When you sign a lease you promise to pay for a set period of time a set amount of money. No matter what. That is your word. If something happens you have to find an alternate way to keep your word.

You brag about your boone story where you stole 4 months rent from a landlord. What did she do for those next 4 months? Is it ok for her to suffer becaue you lost your job?

John you have a habit of breaking your commitments. You lie and want people to feel sorry for you. You've told the Boone story, want to tell the clover story? Where you also didn't honor your lease? How many more stories we got?

The fact that you give your thievery behind a shield of "God" disgusts and infuriates me. I've read it and bit my tongue for a long time. Tonight I'm tired of it.

You type all self righteous , why do you move so much?

So you can find the next sucker to steal from, take advantage of and disappear in the middle of the night? So you can find the next member of this forum to give you a job and quit when it gets tough and leave them hanging? You are up to what 3 of those here now?

Get over yourself.
