chris if i was in the boat to get another find a eariler model like i did and get a 7.3.... the bank had no problem handing the cash over to me...dont get me wrong i love the power of my 6.0 and im getting around 18 hwy and around 14 to 16 around town average 300 to 450 miles to a tank
yea i tried to talk my uncle into giving up his 7.3 but all i got out of him was well its paid for and it only has 97k miles and i just done the ball joints so i guess ill hang on to it but id take 16k for it.... i had to
and handed him another beer but that still didnt work lol
I went this round the last time I was thinking of upgrading. I couldn't find a bank to loan my a measly 10 grand for a 2001 F350. I'd love to have the 7.3. Even moreso, I'd love to have a 5.9 Cummins.
My situation is a bit sticky. I've still owe $9k on my Ram 1500. I'll be lucky to get 7k out of it. So, best option is to go to a dealer, get a newer one and trade in the dodge and see if I can do some haggling to get them to eat some of the loan. In January I'll be getting a substantial bonus. I was planning on using the bonus to pay off my credit cards. Paying them off will bring my credit back to where it needs to be and will allow me to swallow a 30k loan on a nice truck.
My other option is to wait and use the bonus to buy an older truck, not pay off the credit cards and figure out how the hell to sell my 1/2 ton dodge. I like the idea of paying cash, but in reality I need to get those credit cards paid off as it will end up saving me more money in the long run.
Decisions...
I'm new on here so I'm not bashing, but all diesels with a DPF filter on them and newer EPA stuff will have problems. I'm a retired fire truck mechanic and had 15 S/D Fords. First by all means I think the best was their 7.3 and lasted the best. I had 4 6.0 which one was my own and blow a head gasket at 11,000 miles. I had 6 6.4's and had problems with all of them, all had new radiators, ECU problems, 2 DPF's, EGR's, and some little stuff. The problem was, peoples life depended on them. Over all fuel mileage was very low because of the regen DPF, which all diesels will be lower to a point. I really like the looks of the Fords but I bought a 2008 Dodge for myself with a 6.7 Cummins. I have a few problems but they were all DPF stuff which all makes have. What I tell people all the time being a mechanic for over 30 years, If you like it and can afford it- buy it! Everything has problems and it's what you want to deal with! Good luck!
I'm prepared to handle the maintenance, but not wanting to swallow 3k+ worth of nightmares. Trying to find the most dependable truck that will get me to Mtn City at speeds faster than 25 mph. I test drove a duramax today and WOW that thing has some ass! I'm now considering them as well, but I really don't like the interior one bit.
Ya know, Chris... the other problem you're never going to be able to fix with that Ford... is that it'll always sound like a stopped-up vacuum cleaner.
Hhaha! You know, it sounds exactly like that! Another thing I am not sure I like is how low the thing sits. Sure I can lift it, but with two-tone paint and all that luxury I'm not sure it'll look right lifted. Not to mention the grandpa style running boards.
If you buy something with a DPF and EGR and plan on keeping it. Take it off asap. The warranty is not worth the added wear and tear on the engine. Mine was off my Dodge with less than 1000 miles on it. I gained 4 mpg around town and that's running it hard. I have seen gains of 7 mpg on the interstate running empty. Now I don't have to worry about how much fuel is in my oil in between oil changes, or how much soot and carbon builds up in my intake, or my turbo going out because the EGR has sooted it up to the point that the variable geometry becomes fixed geometry.
The fuel in oil is a major problem with DPF trucks. There is so much fuel being injected that there's very little way to prevent it from going into the oil when it goes into regen.
And unless you're just set on Spartan, H&S is a lot cheaper and is just as reliable.
Not set on anything at this point. I do plan on deleting the DPF, especially if I buy this Ford. It has 91k. As soon as it hits 100k it's gone.
Drove the Ford to work today. Check engine light came on and turbo is not working. When floored, it will not shift and sits at 3k. If you barely press the gas it will accelerate and shift fine, albeit dog slow. There's also some ticking/tapping noise coming from the firewall. I took it back to the dealer and they're going to check it out. I'm thinking EGR problems. I got the OASIS and service history on the truck. It's had the radiator and EGR replaced. Also, the
Venturi Tee has been installed.
I was very impressed with the Duramax I drove. It was 2007 3500 LTZ long bed. Silver birch color with black interior. Truck drove great, but felt small inside. Had MASSIVE amounts of power, probably because there's no DPF. Really liked the Allison transmission. Performance wise, this is the best truck I've driven yet. I just can't stand the looks of the interior. Plus they want 36k vs the 30k for the ford which has way more options. More decisions.
