Ford 6.4 Diesel

chris if i was in the boat to get another find a eariler model like i did and get a 7.3.... the bank had no problem handing the cash over to me...dont get me wrong i love the power of my 6.0 and im getting around 18 hwy and around 14 to 16 around town average 300 to 450 miles to a tank
It's gettin hard to find a good,lo mileage 7.3 and most that have em for sale know what they have-I've been lookin for a new one myself.

yea i tried to talk my uncle into giving up his 7.3 but all i got out of him was well its paid for and it only has 97k miles and i just done the ball joints so i guess ill hang on to it but id take 16k for it.... i had to  and handed him another beer but that still didnt work lol

I'm new on here so I'm not bashing, but all diesels with a DPF filter on them and newer EPA stuff will have problems. I'm a retired fire truck mechanic and had 15 S/D Fords. First by all means I think the best was their 7.3 and lasted the best. I had 4 6.0 which one was my own and blow a head gasket at 11,000 miles. I had 6 6.4's and had problems with all of them, all had new radiators, ECU problems, 2 DPF's, EGR's, and some little stuff. The problem was, peoples life depended on them. Over all fuel mileage was very low because of the regen DPF, which all diesels will be lower to a point. I really like the looks of the Fords but I bought a 2008 Dodge for myself with a 6.7 Cummins. I have a few problems but they were all DPF stuff which all makes have. What I tell people all the time being a mechanic for over 30 years, If you like it and can afford it- buy it! Everything has problems and it's what you want to deal with! Good luck!

Ya know, Chris... the other problem you're never going to be able to fix with that Ford... is that it'll always sound like a stopped-up vacuum cleaner.

:flipoff2:

If you buy something with a DPF and EGR and plan on keeping it. Take it off asap. The warranty is not worth the added wear and tear on the engine. Mine was off my Dodge with less than 1000 miles on it. I gained 4 mpg around town and that's running it hard. I have seen gains of 7 mpg on the interstate running empty. Now I don't have to worry about how much fuel is in my oil in between oil changes, or how much soot and carbon builds up in my intake, or my turbo going out because the EGR has sooted it up to the point that the variable geometry becomes fixed geometry.

The fuel in oil is a major problem with DPF trucks. There is so much fuel being injected that there's very little way to prevent it from going into the oil when it goes into regen.

And unless you're just set on Spartan, H&S is a lot cheaper and is just as reliable.

I went this round the last time I was thinking of upgrading. I couldn't find a bank to loan my a measly 10 grand for a 2001 F350. I'd love to have the 7.3. Even moreso, I'd love to have a 5.9 Cummins.

My situation is a bit sticky. I've still owe $9k on my Ram 1500. I'll be lucky to get 7k out of it. So, best option is to go to a dealer, get a newer one and trade in the dodge and see if I can do some haggling to get them to eat some of the loan. In January I'll be getting a substantial bonus. I was planning on using the bonus to pay off my credit cards. Paying them off will bring my credit back to where it needs to be and will allow me to swallow a 30k loan on a nice truck.

My other option is to wait and use the bonus to buy an older truck, not pay off the credit cards and figure out how the hell to sell my 1/2 ton dodge. I like the idea of paying cash, but in reality I need to get those credit cards paid off as it will end up saving me more money in the long run.

Decisions...

I'm prepared to handle the maintenance, but not wanting to swallow 3k+ worth of nightmares. Trying to find the most dependable truck that will get me to Mtn City at speeds faster than 25 mph. I test drove a duramax today and WOW that thing has some ass! I'm now considering them as well, but I really don't like the interior one bit.

Hhaha! You know, it sounds exactly like that! Another thing I am not sure I like is how low the thing sits. Sure I can lift it, but with two-tone paint and all that luxury I'm not sure it'll look right lifted. Not to mention the grandpa style running boards.

Not set on anything at this point. I do plan on deleting the DPF, especially if I buy this Ford. It has 91k. As soon as it hits 100k it's gone.

Drove the Ford to work today. Check engine light came on and turbo is not working. When floored, it will not shift and sits at 3k. If you barely press the gas it will accelerate and shift fine, albeit dog slow. There's also some ticking/tapping noise coming from the firewall. I took it back to the dealer and they're going to check it out. I'm thinking EGR problems. I got the OASIS and service history on the truck. It's had the radiator and EGR replaced. Also, the Venturi Tee has been installed.

I was very impressed with the Duramax I drove. It was 2007 3500 LTZ long bed. Silver birch color with black interior. Truck drove great, but felt small inside. Had MASSIVE amounts of power, probably because there's no DPF. Really liked the Allison transmission. Performance wise, this is the best truck I've driven yet. I just can't stand the looks of the interior. Plus they want 36k vs the 30k for the ford which has way more options. More decisions. :)

I'd say pay off those cards cut them up except one some u can fix the jeep after everytime we wheel and trade the dodge in on what ever u feel is right taking a loss sucks but its gonna happen

I think paying off the cards is the route to go as well. Makes more sense. I'm paying almost $300 a month in interest on the damn things. That plus the dodge payment is one helluva nice new truck.

I towed the Bobcat with the Dodge last weekend and that's what prompted all this shopping. It almost killed it. Transmission got too hot I guess. Popped the light for trans fluid pressure sensor and would not shift down to first gear. Had to take off in second a few times. After everything cooled down it was fine of course. But still, I've even had issues towing the XJ. It's just time to get a real hauler.

Next time you need your Bobcat hauled, let me know and I will haul it for you! If I can swing by my house for a few hours of work with it! LOL, I'm only down the road from you behind the Golden Corral.

i too am considering a newer truck with a diesel. right now i have an 03 six speed cummins dually that gets worked pretty good. its been a good truck but i hate dodges cheap interior and the ac controls fall apart.

i really like the 08 and up fords. the interior is awesome. from what i have read the egr and dpf delete are pretty much mandatory for any kind of mileage and longevity. i drove 2 6.7 dodges( all stock and auto) and the 08 ford had more power stock.

i have been looking at a used 08 f350 with 185k miles. the truck looks really clean and was pretty much highway driven. i had my friend at the dealer run an oasis report and the truck was well maintained and had no issues at all other than the radiator and a couple recalls.
i am still a little skeptical about the miles though. the first thing i would do is get the h and s tune, dpf delete, and air intake. these trucks will put down over 550hp and 1100 torque to the wheels! that is amazing considering the mods only cost about $1500 or less.

get in touch with aaron at rudys performance here in nc if you want to do any mods. ive only talked to him on the phone once and when i told him about the high miles on the truck and what i wanted to do, he offered for me to bring it by and he would check it over for me.

Just got off the horn with the dealer. It was indeed the EGR... lol That makes the second EGR it's had on it in 91k miles. <shaking head> Why oh WHY did they have to go the emissions route! ugh!

Thanks for the heads up about Rudys and all the other recommendations. If I buy this thing, it'll be in the shop within the first month getting those mods.

Cause the gov won't let them build em w/o emmissions stuff. If your serious about gettin the Ford the bad Egr might be a bargaining chip, especially if your just gonna delete it.

Most def, along with the scratches on the rear of the cab and the various other little things that are wrong with it.

Oh, and those UGLY ASS white letters WILL HAVE TO BE turned around.

Good luck, I hope it works out for you! I still like the looks of the S/D Fords. I'm going to be doing a DPF/EGR removal this spring on my Dodge. Hell done some removal of "stuff" before so if you get it and need a hand, let me know!

Thanks man! Haven't we met at an event or on the trail before?

Not yet, I'm behind the Golden Corral on 29 by I-85. I drive a red mega cab with a cap on the back, little lift, maybe you seen it driving around. I know the place your looking to buy your truck from but I have not dealt with them yet myself.

I've bought several trucks from Hilbish over the years. Bought my current Dodge from them back in 2007 actually. It's always been a pleasant experience. So far this go round has been the best experience yet.

Spoke with a sales manager at Ben Mynatt today. He called me thanking me for stopping in yesterday. It's typical to receive follow-up calls, but this guy was really nice and overly accommodating. Are dealerships changing their ways?? It would seem so for most. However, I talked to Tim Marbuger and wasn't as pleased with their service. I got the typical car lot drama and pressure. Plus they don't have squat for used trucks on their lot and their new ones are all decked out at 60k plus. Not what I'm looking for. Parks Chevy was also nice, but I dealt with a fleet sales guy. They're usually more laid back.

Welp, took that truck back to the dealership. Just didn't like it. After fixing the EGR it was a little more powerful, but still wasn't what I wanted. Just couldn't see spending that much money for a truck I wasn't completely happy with. I did find one I fell in love with though. I'm back in a Dodge. :D

So where are the pics?

Glad to know I didn't talk you out of buying one. I realized afterward that I never told you that I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

yeah those new fords are a beast with some easy programming but I would rather get an older truck that I can do more mods too and make it just like what I want lol!

Chris I was going to tell you to buy mine since they couldnt figure out what was wrong with it but come to find out I got screwed on buying some crappy injectors from a guy so now I gotta buy some brand new ones they will set you back let me tell ya lol!Glad you got a nice truck man!

Sorry I missed these posts somehow. I took the Ford over to amajeepman's and let him look at it and drive it. He had the same feelings about it I did. When I found the Dodge that night I went to get it the next day. Not once did I have a negative thought about it. Hell even after having it for a couple weeks now the only remotely negative thing about it is it isn't the mega cab. :D

Here's the new truck:
