now, as the other thread asks, do i replace it with a spool or a detroit? Called ECGS on Sat, and will buy parts this week

my vote is for the detroit.

holy chit . been there before.

spool. less moving parts

Spool for me also. Much cheaper, less to go bad, guaranteed transference of power to the wheels. I never did like the jerking of the Detroit I had and not knowing when it would kick in or out, at least I know what my spool is going to do and when :)

I put an ARB in my TJ's 8.8 and am super glad I did. I love being able to switch it off and make the sharp turns. The mini ARB compressor was cheap and fits in an out-of-the-way space.

I DD my TJ, but even if it was a trail rig only, I would have put in the ARB. Switching it off has helped numerous times on the trail.

im fixing to do the 8.8 swap... after seeing this, is that still the axle of choice for a mild trail/street rig on a budget?

Yep.
I've beat on mine for about five or so years now. I don't have a stroker but I do have 4.3:1 in the transfer case with 4.88's riding on 37x14.50's. This is not to say it won't ever happen but it has worked for me.

If you were really good with duct tape......

Not.....Yes it is generally strong enough but add enough HP and you end up in the 14 bolt category.....

I haven't heard of many spider gears doing what mine did, and my axles previous owner was equally hard on the axle, so I chaulk it up to freak chance. A spool and a new set of 4.56's and I'm good to go. This axle is in a HEAVY ZJ, nice 4.6 stroker, ax15 with a great clutch that is still new and tends to act like an on/off switch, and 35's. I did this 'showing off' on pavement, with alot of traction.

Perfect time to install the new axle bearings i just happened to have laying around. And i was gonna lock it this winter anyway, I'm really only out the cost of the gears.

If your on a budget, you can pick this axle at a pull-a-part for about 125 with 410's and a limited slip
