Ford 9" Mini Spool Intall Help

I don't know why you would put a mini-spool in when full spools are so cheap on eBay. I picked up a chromoly spool for $75. I guess it would be good for seeing how it handles without taking the whole carrier out.
 
that would be awesome. except for the fact that i don't want to regear right now and i don't want to have to resetup my gears. i'm just looking for something to get me at least 3 wheel drive right now and not spend all my money
 
You will have to reset the backlash anyhow to install the minispool. You have to remove the carrier. Remove the ring gear and split the carrier. Swapout the spiders for the minispool, then reverse.
 
alright, on this backlash, i've been searching and it says a magnetic dial indicator? and i've read a couple articles on how to set up gears. I've done basically all the work on my truck, which is more than i would have liked. the only tool i am missing is the dial indicator? can i do this?
 
Yes, you can, or I can drop by and show you how to do it and bring my tools with me.

Looks like this thread is old and dead however. Geez I wish I had internet access at home...

Sure thing, let me know, I've done 5.13s in a 9" and a few Nissan axles. Looks like I will be doing a D44 and another 9" soon with 5.38s.
