Im helping out a girl here at work with an issue with her Ford Expedition:

Story:

2006 Ford Expedition XLT (2wd)
83000 miles

Check Engine light came on Sunday night. made an appointment for this am at the ford place to check it out.

They told her that her catalytic converter was going out and needed replacing. They also told her that because they had to replace it, they needed to clean her injectors or the new converter would have the same problem.

Cost: $1200 plus tax

I happened to walk in the building as she was coming back from the dealership and she mentioned it to me...that is how I got in the middle of this.

Ive done some searching, but thought someone here could point me in a better direction to help her out.

I had her call the dealership and see what the diagnostic code was (they charged her $82 to pull the code). The "customer service" person looked over the paperwork and told her that there was not code, that the "mechanic" had simply written on the paper that "new catalytic converter needed". No code.

Questions:

Wouldnt they have to at least provide a code if they charge for a diagnostic on the truck?

What code would show up and mean "new catalytic converter needed" ?

Anyone know the cost of a catalytic converter? They told her it would be close to $800 for one.....

Anyone know if there is a trick to getting the codes without using a scanner (like the on-off trick with jeeps)?

I feel like she is getting ripped off...and I dont like that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Chris

maybe I'm way off base here, but i thought the feds mandated that the emissions equip(mainly the cat) last a certain amount of time, regaurdless of factory warranty on the truck? And an 06 with 83k would be below that amount??????????????

They should have a code written down. Take it to Advance or Vato zone and they can read the codes. At 3k over the warranty period on a $1200 repair, I'd call Ford and bitch...As for the fuel injection clean, not buying it. It might help throttle response and fuel mileage, but I doubt it would destroy the cats. $800 doesn't seem too far out of range to me, but I fix BMW's (Break My Wallet).

I second the taking it to Autozone or the like and get a free code read and go from there. I would also call the stealership and ask them how they determined it was bad and that you are interested in what caused it. Sounds like they are just trying to pay the bills to me :shaking: I would bet it is NOT the problem.
