I recently bought a 2000 F350 4x4 dually under 80k and it seem like "sometimes" when in reverse and I cut the wheels all the way I hear a popping noise in the rear end. I never hear the noise when in drive. I have even cut sharp figure 8's in drive and never hear the noise. Only in reverse cut all the way.

Wondering if anyone has experienced this issue before. Just trying to get all the info I can before I start taking apart the rear end.

Thanks

Could be the posi making noise, mine does under torque. Could also be the bearings, that was another problem with mine! Does it make a similar sound when turning with a heavy load tied to the back?

Pull your diff cover and look inside, preferably before you load it..

is it a 4x4?

have you checked the front axle u-joints? Are the auto hubs locked? these noise locations can fool you from where they come from.

The auto hubs are set to auto but they are really hard to turn. I'll have to check to see if they are stuck and locked. I have been told the noises will fool you but I was almost positive it was coming from the rear end. Since your second person to say that I guess I better start listening. Thanks Jeff

let us know what you find

Sure it's not the tire rubbing on the leaf? Mine does that with tires that are 1/2" taller and an inch wider than stock.

I will check the hubs and double check the leaf springs for rubbing and let you know what I find. It just seems strange I only hear the noise in reverse.

I removed the rear cover and everything looked normal including the oil, no metal shavings no wear on gears etc. I did replace the rear end fluid with 75-140 with the limited slip additive already added, only thing the auto parts store had.

After having someone walk beside truck while I backed up, noise sounds like it is coming from the driver side rear wheel. So I will have to start taking that side apart and checking the bearings.

I have a feeling nothing will be to noticeable with bearing since it does not make the noise while in drive and only makes it while backing up.

You will need a special tool for the lock nut on those bearings. I got mine from OTC. Maybe in the inner drum brake? maybe bearing. does it make any noise if you jack that corner and spin the wheel?

I'll be picking up the "spindle nut wrench" this week and hopefully getting time to tear down the rear this weekend. I will be looking at everything to see if anything looks worn or damaged. Now that you say the inner drum brake, it seems like I can feel the noise through the brake pedal as my foot hovers/rides the brake. I'll jack up the wheel and spin it to see if I hear any noises also.
thanks
