My father in law has a 98 ranger 4.0 4x4. The right rear axle shaft is bent, it has drum brakes. I can only assume it's an 8.8, is it? Is it the same as an exploder? If so, does it have to be off a drum brake rear end? Anyone got one or know where one can be had quickly? This guy has helped me way beyond the call of duty the past several months with my arm being out of comission. I really want to help him asap. thanks.

Ranger 8.8 is smaller than the explorer 8.8, Less splines, the 8.8 in the explorer is 31 spline ( I have one in the jeep) the Ranger has a 28 splines

the exploder 8.8 is also about 2-3" wider than ranger (or mazda) 8.8. the disc setup in 8.8s use a different shaft bearing retainer plate than drum brake setup. so if he's looking to upgrade, then yea go with exploder 8.8 (post-95 for discs), otherwise the easiest thing to do is find early 90s to early 00s ranger (they started putting discs in some ranger 8.8s in 00s models)
