I've got a 1992 F350 crewcab/ut.bed as my tow rig.It came factory with the 5.8 and zf5.Here are my questions:
1-other than the little rubber plug under the bell housing,I can't tell if there is an thin metal inspection cover in front of the bell housing. Is there one that can be removed to inspect the fly wheel?
2-I know the 460/diesel powered trucks had that damnable dual mass fly wheel.Does mine since it is a 5.8?
3- rear main seal replacement.Still have to do it like on earlier engines or did they improve the design?I've got to change out the pan gasket and might do that too.
I've had something to do with this truck since it was brand new.It was actually my fuel hauler for my crew for a very long time.I bought it from my company after it was phased out of service.Actually the best thousand I spent in a long time.

There's a sheetmetal plate between the motor and transmission, but it's sandwiched between them and won't come out. I've never seen one with an inspection cover on the lower half. You can remove the starter and see some there, or the rubber plug that you mentioned already.

I've never heard of the 351W getting a dual-mass flywheel.

Rear main seal is one piece, goes in around the crankshaft. Transmission and clutch/flywheel are both in the way. That said, make 100% sure that it's not a valve cover leak first. If that ZF has the concentric slave cylinder (input shaft goes through it), consider replacing that while you have everything apart.

well if I pull that zf,it'll get rebuilt too.It is finicky when shifting esp. when cold.Noisy as all hell too.Truck has just hit 200,000 miles and it's got it's quirks. It worked hard while the company used it. A 7,000 pound bobcat on a 4,000 pound trailer with a 100 gallon fuel tank, full bins and at least 4 fat asses.I'm really surprised it has lasted this long.If it blew up tomorrow,it doesn't owe anybody anything.Truck shop that "serviced" it put 90 weight plus lucas in the tranny to get it to last a little while longer.I've spent the last 3 years working the "maintanance shop's" bugs out.

Make sure the fluid in your zf is in good shape and the correct type. It takes mercon ATF. Some of the later zf5's called for synthetic. It would be a good idea to keep the best synthetic ATF you can find in it, and keep it changed. ATF just doesn't last as long as gear oil
