So I ran into a situation this morning and I just want some clarification on how this happens exactly.

Had an Asian lady who we needed some info for at work. Got her to come in and get that info, she turned in an expired DL from 2012 that had a local address. She drove herself over here, but has not had a valid DL in over 2 years. Had a Passport that was not valid - from Korea - barely speaks any English and said that she does not have a SS number, but owns her own business and clearly has money....how does this work exactly?

I heard something not too long that these middle eastern people will buy these gas stations and get some sort of tax reduction or something for the first few years and before those few years are up, they sale it to a family member who comes straight off the plane from Pakistan and continues the same cycle...now I don't know how much truth there is to that...but it just makes me wonder...what the hell is going on here?

I see this type of stuff all the time and I just don't get how they can evade all these things and live from day to day.

We're Caucasian american citizens... Its not meant for us to understand.

She probably also voted for Kay today....twice :flipoff:

Passport not valid as in, it has expired? Or something wrong w/ it.
It's possible she's a permanent resident. May not have ever applied for a SS#. IIRC it's not a requirement when you first get a visa to stay. Entirely possible she still has a tax ID number for the business though.
The point is there may or may not actually be anything illegal going on, aside from driving on an expired driver's license.
If it makes you feel any better, if she never got a SS# that means she also can't draw social security benefits.

The Passport was expired.

She was driving and living in the states the same way that the Mexican that ran a red light and killed someone over the wkend in Raleigh. He had been deported but came right on back and was living in the area for a few years.

I'm pretty sure a SS number is required to get a perm resident (or Green) card. When you say she owns her own business, do you mean she has a tax ID number or is a sole propietor (or pretending to be)? If she went thru the trouble of getting a tax ID #, then I doubt she would be driving around on an expired DL. I'm gonna guess that she provides a service of some type under the radar to explain the money, or she gets it from family.

She owns a conv. store. She claimed that she had a tax ID number but because we had no profile for her in our system, we couldn't help her with anything and she sure didn't have it.

I have no problem with people coming over here and making a life for themselves...but when its shady, that's when it bothers me.

I do think that in a lot of cases, it's just honest absentmindedness or not really keeping up w/ rules, verses specifically trying to avert the system.E.g. it becomes shady b/c she has lost the Tax ID (who knows, maybe she has a nephew who actually speaks good english and does the accounting, and he knows the Tax ID?) and never bothered to renew her licenses.

Re: driving on an expired license... meh I know lots of folks that have done that, b/c they were just too lazy, or simply forgot to get it updated. It's kind of a shitty attitude, but when people get old they stop caring about some things.
I'm just sayin' having an expired license dosn't necessarily make you shady... just lazy.

I don't think that having an expired DL makes you a shady person, but in addition to not speaking English, no SS number, being a resident of this country and having an expired Passport...just doesn't add up. I mean, I understand not having one of those or even 2 of those, but none of the above?

Was she hot? I like Asian girls..

Ok so I see this every now and then. At some prior to 2005-2008? Illegals were able to get a nc driver's license with fake documents or the state didn't check. I'm not sure which. But these people were not able to renew because of the changed rules and still have the exp lic. I see it a lot with Hispanics that say that now they can't get a license or renew because they aren't legally here.

I'm sure none of that made sense, but that's what I've seen.

Just want to reiiterate Dave's points.
1- You realize you can legally live here and not be a citizen, right?
2- Doing #1 above does not require you to obtain a SS #. That is a program ONLY for US Citizens.
3- The DL could be an honest mistake or (#4)
4- To renew her passport (if she is a citizen of another country) she would have to return to that countyr to renew her passport. Without a valid passport, no SS#, no birth certificate, etc she may not be able to acquire a current DL.

but what about having a business? I understand that I don't know everything, just curious.

The business may very well be incorporated, an LLC or similar entity.
In which case the business has a tax ID number and pays taxes.
She may be an employee of the business here on a legal work visa (for example)

Now chances are you are right, they may be tax dodging assholes with 20 family members living off 1 legal ID (probably why her DL was expired another member had the current one that day)just saying it isnt a given.

The good news is that she had no trouble voting!

She would have in SC.
