do these expire? i know bbq grill propane tanks went through a valve update a few years back. one of my tanks is a 1998 and the othere is a 2001, they have different style turn knobs on them, does that have any meaning like it does on bbq grill tanks

I exchange forklift tanks at airgas all of the time, they have never checked for anything... for what it's worth. Somewhere like ace hardware or uhaul that fills propane might check for an up to date pressure rating though.

Formally all gas cylinders expire, but most people don't bother to check. Most places around here fill them and charge 4-$5 per gallon

I think it's right around $32. Honestly, you could just say "put it on xx company's account" and they wouldn't think twice about it. :flipoff2:

man i really need to figure out how to get the propane out of the tank in my yard... its just setting there not hooked to anything any more.. i didnt realise propane was that high. but for the octane it is its actually cheap i guess.

12 years from date of manufacture, every 5years after that.

FWIW, I have seen tanks with a series of dates as far back as 1975 ( on an aluminum tank )

4-5 bucks a gallon???
I pay $2.79 a gallon. That was to fill my RV, and the same as it was when I was filling tanks for my Jeep, a year ago

Right on my forklift tech brotha,,, seen the same, some get scary old,Ive seen large flake rust on some.

I filled mine at the truck stop about a month ago. It was $2.99/gallon. My tanks have the old style valves *and* the new valve (triangle knob). I keep expecting this to be a problem, but so far, so good. I have no idea what the dates are on my tanks... $10 says they're expired. The guy filling them never looks at any of that stuff.

it's all fun and BBQ til someones tank ruptures......

I've been turned away for having the old style valve, ended up just exchanging them for current valve.

ALL tanks have born on dates on the collar, some may be filled/covered with paint, but you should still be able to see it. and usually nobody checks.

there was story on WRAL the other night about how propane dealers are not following up on violations and how the state has not been fining the violations the way they should

http://www.wral.com/news/state/nccapitol/story/10543050/

this could get interesting if/when they start doing their jobs

Your tank should have a wet line on it. All you need is a valve to put on the wet line going in some hose, a safety valve, and whichever attachment to fill your tanks. I did my 250 gal tank last year and I'm loving my $2.09/gal propane. I fill my Jeep tanks, bbq tanks, and my camper tanks. I had about $165 in my setup but I had a safety valve give to me which I think is over $100 by its self. Right now I'm saving a little over one dollar a gal and have pumped out probably 125 gal so It's well on its way to paying for its self.

FYI you can use this setup to aid in installing ball joints.

hahaha this worries me. guess ill call monday and see what direction the gas place sends me. i hope to fire my junk off pane in the am...

I'm with everyone else on the dates. I wish there were more places that inspect tanks because currently it takes forever & costs $$$ getting them done here...

With that being said, I had one place check my dates but my reg spot doesn't & they charge ~$25 for a 33lb tank.

i completely forgot that i have a connection that fills them, 2 miles from the house. maybe he can help me with my home tank fittings.

so how do you read the dates on the tanks?

On the collar, there are several stampings,

W.C. 47.6 this means the bottle will hold 47.6 lbs of water ( testing purposes )

TW is Tare Weight, How much the bottle alone weights ( with fittings, no LP )

the date will be stamped "08 11" ( aug 2011 ) somewhere near the opening of collar where you connect the coupler in most cases will be very legible and in a larger font than the rest of the stampings.

some other numbers for DOT requirements
