I have to go down and pick up my son next saturday. Fort macon is about 45 mins from his moms new place. Whats cool to do other than the fort? Any nearby piers to wet a line?

beaufort area is pretty cool. honestly, the fort is gonna take a good bit of your time. everything is spread out down there so getting from place to place is time consuming. the wild horses and seaside dining at beaufort is worth the drive though.

Great fishing a short walk from the parking lot at the fort. You can fish/walk from the soundside to the inlet or walk 5 mins to the beach and a big rock jetty you can climb out and fish on if your careful. Google Earth it and you'll see the layout. Google chasintailsoutdoors.com for current fishing reports and what's biting. There are several tackle/bait shops on the way to the fort also.

Beaufort is on the sound not seaside but there are some oceanfront eateries in Atlantic Beach, but the Morehead city waterfront is my pick for good seafood, or the Channel Marker on the causeway from Morehead to Atlantic Beach.

I think there are only 1 or 2 piers left now. I remember when there were 6 or 8, but after each hurricane they dwindled away. Plenty of things to check out and lots of great places to eat between Atlantic Beach, Morehead, Havelock, and New Bern.

Feel free to give me a holler when you come down.
