A guy who wants to trade his 88(he said 86 when I called, so not sure of year.)F-350 dually four door cab truck with a rebuilt 6.9 diesel in it. Says body is pretty good one small rust hole behind one of rear fenders. He said two rear tires would need replacing soon. wants smaller car good on gas. He said his gets around 18-21 just driving around.
IIRC he did say it was a four speed, 2wd.

So, pro's/con's??

Is it a power stroke engine? If not, don't bother unless you plan on changing the engine over to one. The 6.9l are lasting engines, but they do not have the torque of the 'stroke' engine. Good luck.

I've logged about 150,000 miles in a 6.9L NA/4spd combo and 5k in a 7.3L NA/5spd combo. Pure and simple... they're NOT fast, but they're not junk either! A Banks Sidewinder (aftermarket add-on) or ATS (factory '94-'97) turbo system will wake it right up for towing without any negative effects.

Dave, when you say not that fast, what ya talking about. I am fine with the speed limit, and some drop off on the hills, but I don't want to give up what I have in the 460 I have now.
Also thining of doing a grease conversion down the road, to cut into my wheeling costs

No issues what so ever running empty to the bed loaded full! (avg. 17mpg full of wood on the highway to Low Gap & back). Only when towing the Moss... the 7.3L NA would pull just fine and run anywhere I wanted between 55-85mph... however steep grades were a bummer! I-40 at Old Fort Mtn. or the grade on 421 going into Boone come to mind! I suspect the same would be true for the majority of Joe Brown/Hanging Dog...

Then it becomes an exercise in matting the throttle and start rowing gears until the top... 35mph cresting Old Fort Mtn. and 25mph cresting the hill in Boone. The short coming of a diesel without a turbo! Most of the Ford/IH folks on TDS had gone to either of the turbos I mentioned to negate any issues towing in the hills.
