Was crawling around under my gf TJ doing some exhaust work and noticed this rust on the back half of the frame rail, should this be a major structural concern? Or does it look like just surface?
Yeah I was afraid of it, just didn’t wanna believe it...she’s on a scuba trip to Florida right now so I’m gonna wait to break the “bad” news to her when she gets back. At least the 5 minutes of searching I’ve done, doesn’t seem the repair kits are too expensiveagreed when you see metal flaking off that aint surface...
I’ve had him do some work for me in the past as well. Might reach out to him, thanks!@MarsFab aint far from you and he repaired some very similar for me years ago.
If memory serves he actually made beefier patches for less than I could buy the "kits"
I figured that might be the case but didn’t wanna go poking holesYou can probably jab a screwdriver through it! It's a TJ problem.
Damn really? I didn’t think it would be that expensive holy hell, I did NOT call buckeye just messaged here but I did give marsfab a call, I’ve had work done by him in the past when he was in Harrisburg so I wasn’t thinking either of these guys were dodging me. The price tag on that repair absolutely sucks though, the ol lady won’t be too happy about that. Thanks for the heads upNobody WANTS to do this repair. It's the kind of job that severely damages friendships and bankrupts play funds.
Did you call @BUCKEYE PERFORMANCE INC. Or just message him here? Because he's rarely on here any more (for that matter neither is @MarsFab )
Place a call...try and reach them and ask if it's really something they want to tackle
Then ask yourself....are you willing to pay what it will take to do this right?
Because it will be north of $4k to do this and do it right
Whew with each reply i dread it more and more. Guess I’ll crawl under and inspect more thoroughly today after work, it does make sense that there’s more rot but I really hope it’s not the case….would it be a better option at that point to just replace the frame entirely? The labor time is extensive and is a big pain.
Without at least a two post lift forget it, axles and suspension. All need to come out.
If one corner is that way, then every corner is probably that way. I would bet money the frame above trans skid plate is rotten too.
I have fixed two of them, and never again.
I have a TJ in the same situation. Used frames are around $1200. A brand spanking new one is $2600 from 4wp. Then you have to transfer all the stuff to the new frame. $$$$ in labor unless you do it yourself. My plan for a later date unless I decide to part it out.Whew with each reply i dread it more and more. If I went that route I’d plan on doing it myself, good thing is the Jeep isn’t our main transportation it’s more of a “fun” vehicle, that’s becoming less fun with each post. But I’m sure parting it out or parting with it altogether wouldn’t be an option for her, she loves that thing.I have a TJ in the same situation. Used frames are around $1200. That looks about as fun as I’d imagine it would be. Looks like we will have some options to start discussing about the future of this thingSOME of the wort involved.....to give you an idea of the suck
Mine wasn't NEARLY as obvious as yours.....
