I know some of you guys deal w/ shipping large/heavy stuff. Tell me if this is crazy.
We're ordering 5 heavy lab tables, typical 30x72. They're heavy... fully welded frames w/ resin surfaces.
What surprised me was the shipping cost. From Austin TX to NE Maryland - $1077, plus $212 for crating.
That is FedEx Economy
Now they are shipped fully assembled, so they're big, but this seems a lot - is that normal?

That doesn't seem too bad. At minimum you're occupying 4 pallet spaces, possibly more depending on how they're crated.

Crating cost are always seem like a crock of shit to me though. It pisses me off to pay for "crating" only to get something and find out all they did was strap the item to a standard 40x48

Seems cheap for govt work .
I try to be a good steward w/ The People's money.
Normally I'd prefer to get things flat packed and assemble on site, but in this case sturdiness is key and labor time for assembly is not cheap.

yep. But I guess in this case at least its 2x pallets each.
Hell I just realized we're gonna net 10 pallets to deal with.

OK thanks, so this is a reasonable price. Roger.

Now you've occupied 10/24 spots on the truck. Looks like you got a pretty good deal after all!

Most truck companies charge by weight, and fedex is usually expensive. How much was the total weight ?

If that's for all 5, seems pretty good. If that is each, then it seems extremely overpriced.

That’s pretty good. I ship a lot of stuff. LTL runs on weight and pallet space. The pallet space is mostly what you are paying for. I can ship 2 pallets that are 200# plus for about $3-400 that distance, and anything that takes a whole truck usually starts at about $1300. You are taking up most of the truck space so it seems right in line to me being it is Fedex, which is typically pretty high compared to SE freight, R&L, and some others I use. FedEx is always the highest.

It's the whole shipment.
FYI standard FedEx freight was about 20% more. Not sure what the difference was.

You are 6'x3' each.
Assuming you can stack these 3 high. You are eating 4 pallets of floor.
Weight doesnt even factor here.

I mean Id wager your paycheck I could beat the rate...but its a $45 toiler seat not a $900 toilet seat.
