Friends Of Uwharrie 2014 HiLites
2014 - Many of our members from various user groups participated in regular FS workdays throughout the year. Mountain bike and OHV trail workdays seem to be the most popular.
January - 501c3 tax exempt status was approved by the Internal Revenue Service. Your donations to Friends Of Uwharrie are now deductible on your annual IRS tax return.
March – FOU worked in conjunction with the Uwharrie Trails & Conservancy to coordinate a multi user group workday on the Woodrun mountain bike trail system to clean up storm damage. There were over 30 trees down on Keyauwee trail alone! This workday, which cleaned up numerous trees downed by storm damage, brought together mountain bike, OHV, horseback, paddling and other user groups to assist the Forest Service in getting the trails reopened.
April - Used grant money from the Carolina Trail Blazers 4wd Club to rent heavy equipment for repair and maintenance of the Daniel OHV trail. Without this projects success there was a very real possibility of the trail being closed!
May - Used a $3,000 grant from the Southern Four Wheel Drive Association for repair and maintenance of Forest Service Road 597 and Mullinix Road. Many truck loads of gravel were used as well as grading by Lemons Backhoe of Troy, NC.
June - Used $2500 donated by the Carolina Trail Blazers 4wd Club from their BF Goodrich grant to put RipRap on the Daniel OHV trail.
October - Friends Of Uwharrie OHV Volunteer Coordinator Chris Brower received the 2014 United Four Wheel Drive Association Environmental Affairs Four Wheeler Of The Year Award! This award is designed to recognize on a national level, the overall significant achievements and contribution of an individual to the sport of recreational four wheeling. Congratulations, Chris, and thank you for all you do for all outdoor recreationists through your service to Friends Of Uwharrie!
