what are you running in your FRONT 60 and pro's and con's on the locker. i need some ideas on what to buy for my hp dana 60. thanks i trail ride , go through mud, climb rocks, and climb hills, some street driving but only in 2wd.

LockRite - Been runinng front LockRites for years. Inexpensive, easy to install, available most anywhere, have been very reliable for me. You can get 2 of them for the price of a Detroit if you happen to have a problem with one.

I run a full-case Detroit. I have the hubs unlocked on the street, so its no issue. It use to kinda suck with the stock steering setup, but now with the hydro assist and the big bore box, I barely even notice it.

i though of both of those ideas. and they both are looking like great ideas. thanks.

Mine is welded right now, but I will be upgrading to arbs all around so I can do some digs and run some stuff open. I ran a lockright in another axle and it did the trick. I have also run the full case detroit and it was nice. I just want to be able to unlock for normal driving and lock it up for the fun stuff.

Run a lockright, cheap and simple. If it breaks on the trail, its easy to make it a spool. I haven't been impressed with the durability of my detroit.

Actually both aren't great ideas, IMO. Don't get me wrong, the Detroit is a fine traction aid, I have had several, but my experience from running both Detroits and LRs is that the LR does a fine job, costs half the price and is easier to install! Kinda makes the Detroit a sensible option only if you question the strength of your stock carrier, don't mind taking the time and expense to set up gears and have $ to burn. Even then I would think most of us can find something to do with an extra $300, especially this time of year :)

You are wise beyond your years fellow grey beard. :D

I've had both also. The Detriot is awesome and durable. But I aint never broke a Lock Right either.

Lockers

Good Topic and my #1 recommended upgrade for any 4x4!!

All work good, but have pro's and con's

-Welded...cheapest obviously, works great, hard to steer w/ jumbo tires, try to keep out welding trash
or pull out carrier and clean before welding...Also great if you have a dumbo passenger/spotter to jump in/out to unlock & turn sharp corners on the trail...that would be me usually..

-Lockright...got em both ends of the little jeep...work as Tony says..GREAT!!..got em free with complete axles..favorite part!!

-Detroit...got one for my 60 front...not built yet...but friends run them...strong durable..cost more...need at least hydro assist or go to the gym once in a while...

-ARB's & Electric lockers..brother got one for his rig..$ even more bucks...awesome for competition, front digs, turning, need air/power source

-I think spools would be OK for Offroad only especially in rear
-Don't know about Ox's or Aussies or others...Limited slips OK for Daily Drivers or Tow rigs... my $.02

I have Lockrights in both of my axles and are working great for me. I do carry an extra set of pins with me for them just in case.

I've seen 2 detroits break when a shaft let go, one took out the ring gear as well. This is not that uncoomon, I heard alot of other people have it happen to them. Does not seem to be a problem with lockrights.

I'm a welded spool head. Especially in front. cheapest, most reliable and most predictable. The way to go in my book. Not that hard to hop out on tight turns without doors. LOL
Had an experienced welder weld mine up solid and I cleaned it thoroughly before install. I might upgrade in future but for $20 labor, it can't be beat. Hydro steer is in the works as well. Of course the 60 this is under is just yard art right now but I run a spool in front of my EB with Dana 44 and love it.

i had this happen to my detroit in the rear when i had a 9" rear. shaft broke in the spline and busted the detroit and busted the case and ruined the bearings. all the parts were brand new. it was the first time i took my bronco off-road. i had fun for about two hours. thats when i had 39.5 boggers and i decided to go one ton.

i greatly appreciate all the advice on front lockers. im leaning towards the lr because of the price. i have a group of bronco's heading to superlift next june and im trying to get ready in time for that. front locker, rollcage, extended radius arms. im doing a dual optima battery set up first thing in the morning.
thanks, and if anyone wants to tag along to superlift , just let me know. thanks ( mike )

I did some wheeling in Slicks XJ the other weekend it has a OX in the front and it is great IMO but make sure you have the cable routed in a way that it dont get smashed

i say lockright. i was all about being lincoln locked till i broke a shaft and couldnt get the broke piece out because the damn crossshaft was welded in place. had to pull the carrier (just the splined end broke off) grind down a screwdriver to fit between the crossshaft and spider gear to hammer out the broken piece. never again.

Mike, I have a Detroit in my front 60, 2 years no issue. It would be hard to give Larry Smith one for his Yota, he has had a lot of problems out of them. A good friend of mine who just sold his rig on here, had a LR in his 60, and he never had an issue either.

So if I were building another one, I would go LR just because of the price.

thanks, im going with the lr . i might even switch to 5:13
my 4:88 are good with the 44's but more gear would be better.
so, hows the van doing?

Van's doing fine. Pulling strong. Added something else to it's list of attributes,. We already installed a power inverter, and a 2nd battery, it now has a microwave!
