Fuel Gauge

I recently bought an 86 K20. The fuel gauge and speedometer both don't work. Surprise right. Well While rebuilding the transmission and T-case I found out why the speedometer isn't working. The plastic gear was stripped so I solved that annoying problem but how do I figure out if my gas gauge is broken or if it is the sending unit or something else? It stays way past full all the time and never moves.
