I tried to start my 88 wrangler w/258 and it didnt seem to be get any fuel. I poured gas in carb and it fired up and ran. Then it would start no problem. Could fuel pump be losing prime?

Check to make sure the filter isn't clogged first. You can also take and run a hose from the pump to a gas can to see if it works. If not just replace it, it shouldn't take more than 30 sec to prime. Pre-priming the carb will cut down on the time it takes.

Fuel pumps can pump fine, & bad check valve, can also let the gas drain back out. Thought that was my problem, on my 304, but when I disconnected the lines, & filter, all had gas. I changed the pump anyway. Not seeing much, if any difference. If it sits 2-3 days, the carb seems to go dry. Same, when I tow it for 1 hour or better.

Yes, for a number of reasons (hole in fuel lines upstream of pump, vacuum on tank or pickup obstructions overcoming the pumps abilities, etc)

FWIW, while the FP "check valves" can get hung open, the carb bowl *should* hold enough fuel to both start & run the engine for 20-30 seconds (at idle). I don't think there's a way for the bowl to be completely drained back through the fuel line/pump (usually, the needle/seat are above the bowls fuel level). If your bowls dry, it's likely there's other issues...
