I need some thoughts on this-
Unintentionally tore up the strainer getting it out of the tank when I dropped the tank, checked several places including 4wd.com but can't find an OEM type replacement.
A friend advised me to get some of the old style metal window screen, use a couple of layers and fab my own, and install an external fuel filter.
Thoughts? Skip the strainer altogether and just go with aftermarket in line filter?

For what rig, the one in your sig (86 XJ Pioneer, 2.8L V6)? For my CJ, I could only find it from Omix-Ada (4wd.com, Quadratec). The links below are for 76-86 CJs, but might work fo rother AMC applications.

yup, should've mentioned that...
I found the thread you had posted earlier, and followed that 4wd link and found this
http://www.4wd.com/productdetails.aspx?jeep-sid=2&plID=0&partID=8157
which is similar in appearance to the oem one.
I also visited Napa and Advance, no luck there either.
4wd.com return policy looks good in case it turns out to be the wrong item...just didn't want to drop the cash without being a little more certain. Plus I'm cheap:)
But I posted up because I don't want to be cheap and stupid:shaking: and do something to put myself and others in danger.

This thread was awesome! I too visited the parts stores just last night looking for the strainer and they were no help. When you have a vehicle with an engine from another vehicle, they just don't understand that and can't help in the least.

NC4X4.COM to the rescue again!!:driver:

dont use a window screen.
It does not have the tensile strength, and will result in particles in the combustion chamber.

Thanks Sky and others, I'm pretty much set on ordering the almost replacement from 4WD.com and if it fits, good. If not, I'll punt but no window screen.
