Post edit inserted at the beginning, my tech turned into a story. Debated on moving to general chit chat, but it is tech worthy I think.

I've spoken to a few of you in DM's and posted several issues that have been popping up on my 2014 GMC 1500 - 5.3. And I much appreciate all the input. Issues from Codes being thrown on O2 sensors, Catalytic convertor codes, Fuel Pressure sensor codes. Long start issues, blah blah blah on everything. After much asking around and interwebz searches I decided to have an Induction Service preformed on my fuel system. I called around to a few places and did some youtubing to see what it was, was it worth it, how much it cost. I found two different service levels. One was spray the throttle body and pour in some fuel tank additive. Something I've done before with carbed engines and 3M product. This service ranged from $100-$150, and involved product you can buy off the shelf for less than half the cost. Then there was another service. It was with a product called BG GDI Induction service. it's a three part that adds an additional step. Hooking up to the High Pressure fuel pump and running a cleaner through the system as well. Cleaning the Injectors without removing them, I presume.

This was a far more expensive product than the others. It was quoted at $450 out the door. WTF? Why $300+ more? I called these guys 2-3 times trying to figure out why and what the difference was. I was looking at several thousand dollars of service to replace injectors, plugs, cats, sensors; so if this service was indeed better and could help my issues, I'm fine with $450. I was skeptical to say the least. and really wondering if the cheaper service would suffice. But these guys could have taken me for the several thousand in repairs, but they suggested this $450 service. A small family owned shop. He suggested it and said let's try it first, I really think it'll take care of most of your issues. Also mentioned that he personally bore scoped an engine intake and combustion chamber, then ran the treatment and bore scoped it again and saw big differences.

Fuck it, let's do it. In for a penny, in for a pound. My limbic system was telling me to go for it.

As I waited for the service while sitting in the odd waiting room that doubled as the Owners office and work station. I struck up a conversation with the owner about auto services, tech, cost of parts and services, etc. I mentioned that I chose his shop and service even though it was $300 more because I believed his service manager was right, or at least on to something. looking around his waiting room office and talking to him, I learn he is a Community guy, a church guy (while I'm not, I do factor this in the equation), Sherriff Grady Judd Kids community supporter, many things that point to being an upstanding honest business man. Anyway, after 20 min of taking up his time, he had to leave. I throw that in because somehow my bill dropped from $450 to $375 before taxes $410 after.

Back to the tech. mind you, I haven't been able to go more than a mile without my check engine light coming on after being cleared after trying various things. So, I jump in the truck and it freakin' wreaks of fuel/chemical some damn thing, WOW! So, drop the windows and go for a ride. first thing I notice is how quick it starts. KEWL! second thing is the check engine light is off. OK, let's see how long this lasts. Like I said, I've not made it a mile around the block previously. Truck seems peppier, that's nice. I continue to drive and drive. No check engine light as of yet. I'm not calling it fixed yet, but it's RATHER PROMISING!! I want to change my plugs now as he said sometimes the treatment can foul the plugs and I might as well since I have about 80K on them.

I'll post up after a hundred miles or so to see what the report looks like, but I'm skeptically optimistic at this point. Hope it helps someone else, or if anyone else has experience with this product or another, maybe you can share? Hell, if someone wants to say the $150 service would have done the same and I'm an idiot, go for it. Not gonna hurt my feelings. Just trying to help any of you out. If this takes care of my Catalytic Convertor codes, I'm happy to pay it. Those damn things were $2000 for the part alone. So If I can save you all some money/effort, cool.

Any update on this? I am having similar issues with my '04 5.3. I may PM you, but also I appreciate you sharing this info. If it can help someone else and me... that's whatsup!!

Well, the check engine light stayed off for far longer than it has previously. So that could be seen as an improvement. But, it is back to the same codes regarding the cats.

The cleaning wasn’t a bust though. Engine starts easier, runs MUCH better, throttle response is improved. Was it worth the higher cost of other induction cleaning services? I don’t know. I don’t have a comparison.

It might be a waste, but I like experimenting and I might try what I found to work on my Honda. Pull the cats out and hose them down with Seafoam aerosol can and put them back in.

After that, only thing left is to flat out replace them. And if I’m looking to move back to NC, I need to sort this soon!

Thanks for the reply. She ran like a top yesterday and today. Still throwing random misfire and O2 sensor codes though. It was super wet and rainy here Monday, so I'm thinking that might have had something to do with it. She's about to turn 200k miles, so I might still look into doing this since you had positive results.

Latest update,

I ordered a pair of the O2sensor extension things off Amazon for $15. Installed them yesterday, drove around town down in Florida for a day, making several stop and go trips and then loaded up the last of my shit down there and drove 600+miles back up here with a trailer doing 13mpg.

No Check engine light so far.

If my cats are plugged, this obviously won’t fix that, but I can say she had plenty of power towing a few thousand pounds and before hooking the trailer up it seemed to be getting better mpg around town now that it was tricking the computer.

We’ll see…

I will send you some pics tomorrow that I found in a similar truck with similar problems. Camera into the upper o2s showed some nasty damage. But they are on the camera in my truck. Hell I’d gut them and tune em out haha

What year and kind of truck do you have that you need cats for?

Now that I’m up here… if I have any problems I know who to call. 😁

and it went off again... weeeeeeeee

What’s the code? I’ve got a 2017 gmc Yukon and it throws a p219a code every now and again for the past 50k miles. Shop manual says the dealer is going to tell me it needs new injectors but I did a balance check on the injectors myself and they were within range.

It can go 2000+ miles or it can go 500 miles, seems to come on more when cold. Always goes away on its own after a few cycles.

I’ve done a fuel injection cleaning service and that seems to help some but may be psychological. Bugs me though.

Mines a 430 cat issue

If your cats are plugged the exhaust at the tailpipe will be super hot. Why don't you just gut them? Edit; nevermind, I just saw 2014 year model.

Exhaust isn’t excessively hot.

Noel and I were talking about pulling the upper O2 and dropping a camera down in there to take a look. I’d like to see if there’s a way to strap a long aerosol can hose to the camera and use the two together to spray my SeaFoam cans down there.

That would be interesting. Kinda like an endoscopic surgery. 😂

Bought a bore scope and dropped in the upstream and downstream side of the passenger cat.

2 picts of upstream and 2 picts of downstream sides. Down stream side looks clear, up stream side has what looks like a little bit of blockage. Never really examined a Cat before to know what is good , bad or ok. Don't even know if this is what I'm looking for. anyone with some input?

The dark appears to just be shadow don in the length of the holes through the cat. In video you can see that better.

What I'm wondering about are the lighter splotchy areas on the upstream and then whatever general coating of exhaust build up is on the entire surface of the cat material.

Anyone know if you can get aerosol can hose that's about 2' long? I'd like to use some of that to be able to reach into the O2 hole and hose down the cat with Sefoam.

The upstream should be as clean as the down. I’d say they are melting

So I’ve had Codes for Cat issues, codes for Fuel tank pressure sensor and now I just had 0451 Evap pressure sensor Code thrown.

All these various codes make me wonder if it’s not a PCM issue or something else causing various problems.

Thoughts?

Leave the keys in it with the windows down and park it in a sketchy area of town. Problem solved.

Last ditch effort before condemning the cats.

Pulled the upstream O2 sensors and hosed them down with Seafoam.

Modified the spray nozzle and the spray can sprayer and taped it to the camera to see where I was spraying.

Hosed it down as best I could with about a half can in each cat.
