Full hydro steering with a 1.5" cylinder?

I have 2 cylinders now, and will have 2 more at some point in time (free). They are about 1.5" bore and ~6" stroke I think.

With a small/light buggy, and 35-37" tires, I would think a 1.5" ram would be plenty, and since it is small the speed would be better than a 2" system.

This will be FULL hydro, not hydro assist, but will the 1.5" be enough?

The buggy will weigh about 2K lbs, and the weight will be biased to the rear.

IMHO you will be fine with that size on a 2k# buggy, You are correct about the speed BUT that depends on the rest of the system AND something I hardly see people mention, where exactly on the knuckle your pushing (how far out from the steering axis you are and its lever affect)

hmm...i just remembered, PJ has a 1.5" double ended ram (i think) on his rear steer in his buggy and it steered very quick.

Ok. Well I measured the ram today, I am guessing at the 1.5" bore, it is slightly smaller than my 1.75" bore ram on my truck.

It actually has 5 3/4" of stroke, which I think will be fine.

Since they are free and in good shape, and I'll have 3 spares, I think I will go with it.

I'm going to use a Chevy PS pump (something reverse rotation for my engine), which should be high enough flow (might have to be modded), and a steer orbital off a forklift.

I thought about using a hydraulic pump off a forklift and putting a pulley on it somehow, but that might be tough to work out.

Too much to do and too little time...
