im looking to do a full width swap in to my xj. i have found some axles but im not sure if its a good deal or not so looking for some insight on what i should be paying for a set out of the same truck. they came out of a 78 if that makes a difference. also would like to know if these axles would be a good choice or if there is a more desirable year.

From my experience just about all 78/79 hp44s are cast wedge. The 77 and prior are more desireanle weld on. As suggested above, never a bad idea to go with a 3/4 ton front. Its 8 lug, its setup for leaf spring and a good move for planning ahead. Once you have a set of 8 lug wheels you'll already have them once you decide to upgrade to a 60 front in the future.

My only concern is the weight and size difference of a 60 compared to a dana44 or 9in. I'm only planning on running 37s and 4-6 inches of lift and I figured a 60 would be to big and drag on everything

With 35-37" tires you'll never break a 9". It can be done but over the years I would have done it lol. You'll get tired of breaking a 44 no matter what rear you go with but it will get you out in the trail wide and low.
