Fun But Expensive Trip To Callantee

So there I was with several friends, all accomplished wheelers middle of the afternoon on Saturday at that well known obstacle on the Welder trail which we don't speak of because of the tree hugger brigade, when I try one too many times to get up and over said obstacle and of course put the jeep near on its lid from the drivers side. We get the thing right side up, let it rest before trying to spark it back up and of course the horrible dreaded knock/rattle noises come directly from the engine. Cleaned the plugs but to no avail........fast forward to home and upon inspection I see a nice/lovely hole in the block.
So, questions:
The heep is an 01TJ on 36's with no upgrades to the engine/tranny (lots of stuff elsewhere if it matters?)
What would be the good, better, best scenario?
Stock rebuild (yes new block) or upgrade to......?
Thoughts from the Jeep guru's......

I'd just try to find another 4.0 a swap it in. Probably the easiest and cheapest route you can go. Course if you have lots of bucks and want to break more stuff you can go the V8 route :)

you forgot to say that I made it up said obsticle before you:flipoff2:
sent ya an email of a guy in TN selling a comlete motor from an 01 TJ.

Fred

get a replacement engine, and stroke that before installing it.

And next time, pull the plugs, ya lazy ass.. :flipoff2:

Welcome to the club!

I got lucky and Carl had a low mileage '02 4.0 that I picked up. Replacement will be your easiest and cheapest option.

Ian,
You must have starved it for oil for a good while!
Anyway, you didn't say, and I don't remember if you have a four or six. If it's a four, I would be looking for a six, if it's a six, I would do the stroker.
All you have to do is find a donor six banger to build. The only difference in the build is you will have to find a set of rods from a 4.2, instead of ordering pistons for the 4.0, order for a 4.2 to go along with what ever you have to bore the engine out to. Instant grunt, instant HP!
From what you had to what you'll have, it will feel like you have a small block under the hood. They do make good power. So you get the power of a mild Small block, none of the hassles of emissions to make it pass, and a lot cheaper in the long run.
The only other option I would consider would be to just go back stock.

Even if you do a stroker, you will need a new everything almost. Might as well get another 4.0, and rebuild it and build a stroker.

use your 4.0L block and pistons (larger bore), find a 258 crank and rods (longer stroke), voila...4.7L stroker :huggy:

4.0L. bore and stroke: 3.88" x 3.44"
AMC 258 I6. bore x stroke: 3.75" x 3.90"

EDIT: find a 4.0L core

Hey Chip et al,
Thanks for the advice on the stroker route, I'll certainly look into this...and yes its an inline 6
Fyi the oil was up to the levels for where they should be, just my luck I guess...:shaking:
Joel! Thanks for the pic! looks exactly like mine!

Mine was an '00 and everything was fine with maintenance done regularly. What I found out was that this isn't that uncommon in '99 - '01 4.0's. If you decide to go with another 4.0 and can get an '02 or later, do it.

Interesting observation....I wonder why?....After I rolled and as soon as I settled I immediatley turned off the engine.....maybe it was the red zone :bounce2: up and down at that 45-50 degree angle for what seemd like 10 minutes which didn't really help!

No idea. I drove mine to work one day and it sounded and behaved just fine. Hopped in 4 hours later at lunchtime and as soon as I started it up you could hear it.

Cheerio mate! Good luck to my lad!
Sorry about the bum news!
Ahh...chit happens right, luckily me and the new G/F wern't hurt.....in fact she thought it was quite the turn on to get into such positions all strapped in and bound up in the 4pt harness......I'm such the lucky bloke at the moment:D

Ian,
drop a Dodge Small Block in it... they seem to be able to go up said obstacle with little issue...
