What do your kids have? My knowledge of gaming consoles ended with the original Xbox when I was in early highschool. My boys are 7 (8 in a month) and 5. They are wanting a Nintendo switch from Santa this year. Apparently dads 1999 N64 isn't cutting it anymore.

We have a Switch, Xbox X, and I have my gaming PC.

Switch is awesome. My wife plays it on road trips, plus Mario Kart/Party etc for groups is a lot of fun. Super portable or can be hooked up to the TV.

Save the Xbox for early teen years plus the new gen consoles will probably be out by then.

I have an x box series X, I don't play on line so no subscription to game pass. works very well and is backwards compatible for old games.

My 8yo has a switch, I have several generations of Playstation.

I like the switch, you can download the games or get the cartridge, she can take it anywhere and charge it on a USB C charger, and it hooks to the TV super easy so I can properly defeat her and her spirit in Mario Kart 😁😂

Another vote for switch. My kids are older now (14 and 19) but despite having a PS4 and XBox 1, thats mostly what they played with. And when Jonas left for college there was a big fight bc it had been jointly owned... he bought her out of her half and took it, then when he comes home he brings it w him so they can play together again.

The portability really is the key, plus none of this subscription crap.

My son has a Wiiu, Xbox, Switch, and PS4. He uses the PS4 the most, but even that isnt very often. He is getting a PS5 for Christmas. He just turned 14. He used the Switch the most when he was younger.

Market place is full of switches for 100$. Santa got the kids a console style a couple years ago. And I came home with a couple of the non console ones for them to share. Youngest asked for a switch and when Santa brought them all one to share, it was “hers” according to her lol 😂

Emulator/Pi so you can play the classics. Excitebike, Tecmo Bowl, etc. There is a modern N64 coming out next year in 4k I might pick up just for GoldenEye and a handful of others like 1080, MarioKart64 and Doom64.

I hooked up my N64 the other day to the TV to see goldeneye, graphics are so bad on the modern tv's, I'm curious to see the outcome of that 4k N64 for sure.

I’ve had every version of the Xbox

Got a PS5 last year, now the Xbox is only being used to play peppa pig for the kids

The switch has Nintendo emulators you can download with a bunch of older games. The controls are a little wonky, especially the N64 games, but I showed my daughter a lot of the games I grew up playing.

Get a Gamebody with Tetris, or Sega Gamegear with Roadrash.

I still have my Super Nintendo hooked to the TV. My gf's kid wanted to play Mario Kart. She's used to it on her switch.

@CLRracer I, too, delivered a proper defeat!

Give them a raspberry pi with all the old NES and Sega games so they can play some real good stuff!
These days that pi costs about as much as the Switch

I have a son who is a avid gamer

I would go with the switch for the most versatility. You can support multiple players if you can only afford one at the time. Its mobile and will hook to tv with base station.

IF you really wanna be El Cheapo and if your boys already have a phone or you have a spare old one, you can get a Backbone, sign up to Xbox, and play xbox games all day long on your phone without even owning an xbox

If you get the switch get an extra set of joycons (assuming youd only buy one switch?). And get the joycons holder as well.

Can’t go wrong with the switch. Then Xbox/PS when they get a few years older. We started with a Wii that a friend gave us for free then went PS4. Upgraded to a PS5 this year. The PS5 Is light years ahead of the PS4 as far as performance goes.
