gas gauge on a 88 Z71

When I fill my truck up the gas gauge only goes to half a tank.. do yall think it could be the sending unit in the tank or the gauge its self?

the best way to check it is to ground the wire to the sending unit and see what the gauge does.

i took my dash apart and cleaned up everything back there than it started working again

Id write that off as a bad ground. Thats the first thing to check when you have a problem like that.
