the engine blew on my 4runner and i am now looking to get a tj
i was wondering if a 4cyl or a 6cyl would be better . i will put at the most 33's on and be pulling a little trailer for my buisness. I want to have enough power to pull my trailer or my popup camper (pULLED THAT WITH A 5cy volvo) But i need to get like 17 mpgwhat is the answer i know i would have to regear and i have a freind that says the 6cyl blow up alot?

help

Do more research. The jeep inline 6's are workhorse engines that go forever when treated right. Thats why they used the same basic engine for so long. As for power I have had both engines and personally I wouldn't buy a Jeep that again with the 4 cyl. unless it was trail only. They just don't do it for me on the highway. Geared correctly at slow speeds in the rocks they are a great little engine. 17mpg is high end of the mpg's you could possibly get but it its that important I wouldn't be looking at Jeeps but you will anyways. For info on gas mileage refer to this thread. Maybe it will help. :flipoff2:

I personally would try and tow something with a Jeep before you buy one you plan on towing with. The short wheelbase and relative light weight makes them less than ideal for towing much at all, IMHO.

4.0L only. I have a 4cyl and I would never get up hill with a trailer on the back. Strong gusts of wind slow me down enough, I don't need a trailer back there.

4.0 all the way.

I got 22 on the hwy, 17-18 city on my stock '97 XJ. Stock gearing (3.55) plus 33s gets me 13-14 in a city in the mountains.

As for blown engines, the 4.0 is as reliable as they come. I know toys are reliable, but it can honestly be said that the 4.0 is one of the best american made engines. Ever.

I wouldn't be looking at a TJ for any sort of tow rig tho. If you're looking at a used jeep, save some coin and get a '97-99 XJ.

Edit: Off the top of my head, the 5-cylinder volvo is fairly comparable to the 4.0 (hpwise at least). I seem to remember our 850 having just shy of 200 horses, 185 or something like that. The 4.0 makes more torque tho I'd guess, and probably has a bit better tranny and axle gearing for towing (at least in an XJ).

If you're going to be towing a lot, check out XJ's, ZJ's, or WJ's. Hell you can get a WJ with a v-8 and leather for about the same price as a nice TJ. Best thing is the v-8 gets almost the exact same MPG as the 4.0L ~15 city & ~20+ hwy.
