Gas mileage in older vehicles

to the OP, just make sure you do a cost comparison of the actual investment in re-modding the older vehicle versus the price of the newer one....no sense in spending thousands more on a 'custom' drivetrain that may take more upkeep in the long-run just to save 3mpg.

It's not just all about the MPG, it is about having something cool that no one ever sees as well. :)

My Subaru is probably the last new car I'll own. I love the little thing, but new cars that aren't Trans Ams or Camaros just aren't my thing.

No joke.
If the goal is saving money... and the swap costs you say $3k by the time its done... consider cost of donor vehicle, parts, adapting, all the things you buy for your wife in the meantime to keep her happy about the pile of parts in the garage...
If the actual saving in $$ is even $500 a year, that's still 6 years just to break even!
Of course the "cool factor" is a totally different story - but harder to sell to a wife!

Well, my wife was fine with the 454 Suburban and lifted K5 when I owned them, because I loved them. She just hated the gas mileage in both of them.

So a cool car I love that gets decent mileage? That's gravy right there!

I also get tired of my cars VERY quickly. I tend to like the older ones more and hang on to them longer. Maybe that's why she would be more ok with it.

cool points cannot be topped!!! except with good milage!!

Here is what you need.
Modern materials and drive train with 50's saftey and emissions. You'd see great mpg with that set up.

yeah as long as it is titled 35yrs old there is no inspection so that would be no problem to take that stuff off and it would still have less harmful emmisions than it was originally!!!

OK, so I think I might actually do this.

76 Valiant 4-dr (hopefully find my grandmother's)
Late-model Hemi
Whatever overdrive automatic they came with
Big SRT brakes
Big wheels and tires
Upgrade the suspension and steering
shoulder belt conversion in the back.

Hmmmmmmmm........

I'm sorta doing the same thing with my next project, just a few years newer.

85 S10 that belonged to a good friend, it was given to me after his death.
4.8 from my Silverado that just recieved a 6.0
T56 trans
turbo setup :D
9" rear

Good mileage, stupid power, and a cool factor that would be hard to detect unless you popped the hood!
