2000 Xj. When driving with the windows down there is a strong smell of gas fumes coming from somewhere. If you roll the windows up you can't smell it. No signs of leaks anywhere. Any ideas of where to check first?
My '93 ZJ does the same (sometimes). I'm pretty sure it's the injectors. Not that they are leaking fuel, but maybe leaking down, hence the "rough" 4.0 idle.
When was the last time you replaced your injectors? Guy on mc just had the same problem with his 4.0 and after a lot of trial and error, all he needed was some new o-rings on his injectors.
I've only had the jeep for about a year. Within that time it's only had probably 100 miles put on it. Now that my stepson is driving it's finally getting used. I may swap out the injector o rings today and see if it helps. Thanks.
*He fixes it at post #31.
-this may or may not be close to the symptoms you are having, but there is a decent amount of info there that might give you some ideas.
I'd say leaky fuel injector(s). Back in high school I had a hand me down Chevy Corsica that the injectors leaked so badly that one day I was in the drive through at Burger King at the window and I heard a guy shout from back in the kitchen, "I smell Gas!" The girl at the window turned and shouted back to him, "It's this car out here." I'm pretty sure I lost some brain cells due to driving it for months like that. When I had the 3 of 4 leaky ones replaced, it doubled the value of the car.
