ok my liftgate (back door) on my 95 grand cherokee will not open... the handle works ..well it moves.. i can hear the door lock and unlock, but still nothing.. tried to take off the back panel but i cant get it off becuz the door is shut on it.. or does it come off , and i'm just not pulling hard enough? any help

tap (bump with your fist) on the hatch just below and to the right of the handle while holding the handle in the open position.

Had this same issue. Unlock the lock and hold it in the unlock position with key while you open the handle should pop right open. Once open take the panel off and you will see the rod that runs down to the latch. Pop it out of it's holder and then reinstall it a little higher. It has slipped down like mine did and not getting enough travel to pop the latch.

and hit all the moving parts with some pb blaster once you get it open. also check to make sure all the bolts that hold the latch in the liftgate are tight

I just made this adjustment to my '93 and now the hatch works just like new.

If you apply pressure under the handle and then pull handle to open it should work unless ya have something jammed in it!!! worked for mine...

If that dont work then kick the shit out of it!!!!!!!!!hahaha

And now mine doesn't work again. I can feel it locking and unlocking with the key, but the handle is moving freely, like it's not attached to anything. I'm assuming the rod has come out of the retaining/adjustment clip, like I pictured below? How do I get the hatch to open in this situation?
